Is this the “change” you were looking for?

When will people starting fighting back against such big brother, totalitarian minded schemes? This is one law I would actively scream to high heaven about and urge civil disobedience, vandalism of devices,  and any other possible idea to defeat this very un-American law. How far we have fallen from a liberty loving people.

Big brother is watching… as we drive

  1. I think this one will turn out to be a nonstarter but the thought that occurs to me is that such a program will punish those in rural areas. I live near a major urban center and commute roughly 15 miles to work, I drive maybe 2 miles to do my food shopping, and the nearest mall is about 5ish miles away. I’d get off pretty easy with such a program.

Now imagine a guy who lives in rural Montana. He drives 40 miles each way to work 20 to buy his groceries and so on. We’re not talking about joyriding around or driving out to the lake to go fishing here these are trips we need to take to survive. What’s he supposed to do? Carpool? What if his nearest neighbor is 2 miles away and HE works 50 miles in the opposite direction?

What winds up happening is I can drive frivilously with the bumper crop of mileage that I’ve been alloted while the guy in Montana winds up being taxed to survive. Which is not to even get into the whole facist idea of the gubmint tracking us everywhere we drive or the fact that city driving (which I do mostly) burns more gas and pollutes more than cruising around Montana.

Luckily I suspect that this program will never come to fruition but it’s a damn scary prospect.

  2. It will never happen here. It wouldn’t work, either. It punishes people who purposefully buy vehicles that are good for the environment. Beyond that, it’s absurd to try and create a brand-new, complicated and full-of-loopholes metric to tax an activity when there is an extremely easy and, in fact, already taxed product that would serve the overall goal much better.

  3. You’re most likely right that this will never happen Wes but it does irk me that with two wars and a massive economic crisis going on this is the kind of crap that people in positions of power in government waste thier time thinking about.

BTW Pennsylvania is considering doing it at the state leve which is even more ludicrous.

  4. What a stupid idea. The whole point of the stimulus, particularly the tax cut in the stimulus, is that it gets more money into the hands of people who will put it into the economy. This plan takes that money right back from those very same people, thus eliminating ANY positive effects that might happen.

  5. Interesting. Your country is at War with Terror and you’re preaching civil disaboedience?

I do believe we were told that dissent during the Bush administration was, oh what was the word, “treason”…

  6. Nonono, phoenician. See, it’s only treasonous when a liberal does it. When a conservative does it, it’s patriotic. For instance, a soldier who wants to stop fighting the war in Iraq and contacts the media is a traitor. A soldier who claims Obama isn’t qualified to be President and says he won’t obey his commands? That’s patriotism! There’s a subtle distinction to be made, but it’s TOTALLY there. Much in the same way as it was completely improper for Congress to hold hearings on Bush’s security policies, but a matter of duty to harass Bill Clinton about Whitewater and blowjobs for eight years.

Don’t worry, you’re just a silly liberal, but just keep reading National Review and Weekly Standard until your brain gets numb. You’ll get it.

  7. So many libs in need of a “paradigm shift”, it’s scary.
    {/rhetorical}

  8. You gonna throw us some urban/suburban hip-hop love, Mo?

  9. “For instance, a soldier who wants to stop fighting the war in Iraq and contacts the media is a traitor.”

    Example, please.

  10. Rhetorical example based on members of organizations like VoteVets, who routinely face such allegations. Not talking about winter soldiers either.

  11. “rhetorical”? No, I think “lying” is the word you’re looking for.
