Don't ask this chick for "a little tongue"!
Yes, the dialogue is cheesy, and yes, the characters spend waaaay too much time sitting around talking about their feelings instead of chopping up Zombies, and yes, the filmmakers drive them to do stupid stuff that nobody in the real world would consider doing in, like, a zillion years*, for dramatic effect. But the fact remains that when this short series ends in a few weeks there will be a big, gaping bloody hole in this Beast’s Sunday night. It’s flawed, but it’s still the best short horror series television’s seen since “The Stand”.

*Catalog of Stupidity So Far (SPOILER ALERT):
1. At the start of episode one, the Sherrif walks out of the hospital barefoot in a button-down-the back-johnny. After negotiating the trashed hallway (which would be hell on his feet) it never occurs to him to go back to his room and put on some damn clothes.
2. With a plethora of abandoned vehicles about he abandons his cruiser when it runs out of gas and opts for the very very minimal security of a horse to get about. Granted, gas pumps don’t work with no power, but a siphon hose and a bit of gravity can cure that problem.
3. Horsie gets chomped in Atlanta and Sheriff hides from zombies in an abandoned Abrams tank. It never occurs to him to jump on the tank’s 50 Cal to grease said zombies. In the end he abandons the tank, never even trying to start it up. According to military types on other forums the Abrams comes with an operator’s manual in its glove box. And how do unarmed zombies take out a tank in the first place?
4. Cuffed to a piece of threaded rod and awarded a hacksaw, guess what the redneck character chooses to cut?
5. Two chicks sit in a canoe fishing fly rods like bait rods and blathering about “Dry Lures”, which do not exist. Maybe they meant “Dry FLIES” which do exist, but you have to cast them. At least they weren’t holding the fly rods upside down.
6. The survivors set up camp on a mountain with no defenses and no guards. They do string cans on strings around it as a perimeter warning device, but at the end of episode four the Zombies walk right into camp and chomp away with hardly a jingle to alert the under-gunned campers. These must be the only people in the South who can’t lay their hands on a large supply of firearms at a moment’s notice.
Willful suspension of disbelief is an essential element for any kind of storytelling, but it’s especially important for fantasy. Accepting that dead people walk is tough enough without characters doing stupid stuff they’d never attempt in real life. When this happens (and it’s all too common) it usually comes about because the storyteller wants a dramatic moment and he takes the lazy way out, just directing the character to do whatever bone-head maneuver required to bring it about. This jolts the viewer out of the story and makes it harder to accept the fantastical elements.
At least in “The Walking Dead” these jolts come less frequently than in other horror stories. Season 2 could be better.
N.Korea “readies missiles,” China to help ensure peace
Things are beginning to look very ugly on the Korean peninsula. By the looks of things, North Korea is threatening war as we send a battleship to the region and plan with South Korean to participate in war games. Let us see where the crisis leads us.

Islamic terrorism is not an open-ended, universal characteristic. Rather, it is a specific, narrowly defined phenomenon. It is fueled by Muslim extremists bent on waging a holy war against the West. Washington insists on perpetrating the illusion that a Christian grandmother in Iowa poses the same possible national security threat as a 19-year-old Yemenite exchange student majoring in Islamic studies. Hence, America is squandering precious resources and manpower, as well as abrogating basic civil liberties and humiliating its population, in order to appease the sensitivities of the Muslim lobby.
Is Ahmadinejad on the outs?
I am watching headlines for any more information, but since it is coming out of Iran and possibly hearsay, one really may not know. It might be a wish or a schtick, or maybe something more to come. Either way rumors are casting about that Ahmadinejad may actually be cut loose.
Why? From what I have been reading, it may actually be due to oil, Oil Company’s leave and Iran’s own parliament. No matter how devote a muslim may be, even in Iran, there is still a need for money to run a dictatorship. And with 4 different oil companies leaving in the last couple years, as they are American or American Friendly, it leaves a sour taste in the mouth of the parliament of Iran. As the Iran government was sucking so much money out of the Oil Companies to drill in their sands, I really do not blame them for leaving…. Even with the death threats to all who worked on the rigs.

In July 2007, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ordered the dissolution of the Management and Planning Organization of Iran, a 60-year-old, largely independent government body that had been responsible for much of the country’s economic oversight.
Unemployment is officially hovering in the 13 percent range and inflation at about 10%, though unofficial estimates suggest the true figures in both cases may be twice as bad. Unsustainably high subsidies mean, for instance, that Iran is among the cheapest places on earth to fill up your car with gas – just five or six dollars a tank. And because those levels of subsidy simply cannot be maintained, the president is replacing them with cash handouts, which in turn are proving ever-more expensive and hard to sustain.
All this is unfolding in a climate of intensifying, though far from hermetic, international sanctions. No Western oil companies are active in Iran, there is inadequate technical assistance to maintain extraction, and oil and gas production are down. Financial sanctions have sent the cost of doing business soaring, and exports are being hit.
As you can see, it isn’t just America having financial issues due to bad “management”. Yet, as many are noticing the issues with Iran and how much their unemployment has gone up, their costs of import vs exports as well as just having a business in general with the taxing of their citizens… I find this interesting article from the Tehran Times:
The subsidy reform plan envisages a cutting of subsidies on fuel, electricity, and certain goods over the course of five years. The administration has decided to pay cash subsidies for an undecided period of time to compensate low-income families for the inflationary repercussions of the plan. The government has announced the main stage of the plan will go into force in the Iranian calendar month of Azar, which began on November 22.
“They (the West) say we have imposed sanctions on Iran and in sanctions situation, it (the subsidy plan) will not benefit Iran, while I tell them that Iran’s economy is growing but when you (the West) disagree, it is clear that this plan will benefit Iran’s people,” he stated.
Does something sound familiar? I think you can see the jist of what I am trying to say. Honestly, this is bothersome. We know this is a lie, but what can you tell the people of Iran? Is this the start of another “riot” for Iran as it seems that they are on the verge of collapse? And if this keeps up, the Nukes Iran has won’t be the only problem the “West” as well as other Countries face. This will be some economic holy war, as they blame others more so than they blame themselves.
Time may change, but actions do not.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Personally, I am thankful for much. My Family, as some do not have one. My Friends, as some may not have any where they are at the moment. The job I have at the moment, as many do not. The house I recently bought, even though it was a trial due to the sellers realtor. My health, even if it isn’t the best. I don’t have a lot, but what I do have I like to share it with others.

The world does need to see sick minds at work to wake them up for their delirious slumber in allowing all parts of society, not just art, to rot because of neglect.

Mocking the TSA is far too easy
The poor TSA workers. I bet most of them wish they were back working at Taco Bell…
Now, see, I shouldn’t have said that, and that is an undoubtedly unfair thing to say. And it might not even be fair to the nice, hard-working high school kids at Taco Bell. But it’s just too darn easy. When a government entity, especially one charged with the unenviable task of trying to thwart would-be terrorists by harassing passengers and confiscating shampoo bottles, not only seems to be incompetent and insensitive but also just plain worthy of derision then you are in trouble. Everything the government touches just seems to be broken, inefficient, and just a darn, plain old mess while the American public is increasingly willing to challenge anything that violates their long dormant but reawakening feelings of liberty topped off with a bit of “don’t tread on me” attitude. It just seems like something is fundamentally wrong with the circus we see unfolding before us even as we spend untold billions trying to stop some lone Akmed who may or may not be an actual, bona fide, member of the religion of peace from trying to ignite some powder secreted in his crotch.
On a side note, what ever happened to bomb-sniffing dogs? Do they just not exist anymore or might that offend someone somewhere? The TSA is looking for bombs in grandma’s underwear even as they steal fingernail clippers from old ladies and pen knives from boy scouts, aren’t they? Please tell me they are. I think all we need at every terminal are half a dozen trained dogs, some burly looking and well-armed ex-cops, and a few metal detectors. Perhaps with some Israeli-style profiling thrown in for good measure. Combine that with some armored and locked cockpit doors and armed pilots and I think we’d have it covered.
Tongues Twisted: The Last Lingua Franca: English Until the Return of Babel by Nicholas Ostler
Linguistics can be a horribly dry subject without a master writer bearing a good sense of both history and humor captaining the helm. Nicholas Ostler has a long track record at producing books of high quality in the field. I was introduced to his works when radio host Dennis Prager invited Ostler to discuss his first major work, Empires Of The Word. It radically changed how I looked at linguistic migration, giving reasons for why some languages stayed (English, so far), why some disappeared rapidly (Dutch in the Straits of Malacca and Indonesia), and how some weathered some storms well and collapsed in others (Latin and Egyptian Coptic). He also did a wonderful history on the Latin tongue, Ad Infinitum.
Laura Marsh of The New Republic reviews Ostler’s latest tome, The Last Lingua Franca: English Until the Return of Babel, which will deal with the history and development of English as ‘the world’s language’.

Tolstoy’s Excommunication Can’t Be Reversed, Russian Orthodox Church Says
Leo Tolstoy is one of my top five favorite writers ever. Even with this ‘ringing’ endorsement, the Russian Orthodox Church is right in not rescinding his excommunication. Church membership is a voluntary activity, and they have rules communicants are expected to follow. Tolstoy’s embrace of heresy and anarchism, as well as his own very public break with the Church, put him in this situation.

Is it time to boycott Flying?
Being the fact I have to fly everywhere or drive for two days to get out of my State, through a Friendly Nation (thank God) and into the Continental U.S., I really don’t see the need to fly much unless there is a death in my or my husband’s family. That is just me.
But, those who are in the continental U.S. have a choice. Should you Fly or should you drive? Yes, it can be a pain to drive…. but in the end, you ALWAYS have an exit strategy (for those who have caustic families) and those cool GPS’s that can find a new route if traffic is bad. Right? And gasoline or diesel can be much cheaper in the long run depending on where you are going compared to renting a vehicle to drive to your destination. If you aren’t paying 3.33 for gasoline or 3.85 for diesel, please don’t complain.
The TSA has gone too far in my mind. We have seen report after report about the problems this is causing as well as the new “Don’t Touch My Junk” boycott. We have seen the video, heard the stories and shake our heads. But when is it to say enough is enough and tell the family, friends or just cancel you vacation and tell the Airlines…. either you get the TSA out of the airport terminals you rent from out of the airports, or you will go out of business! Honestly, if anyone touched my Mother, Husband or friend (including children) to the point of having them cry due to humiliation, I would have lost it and been arrested.

While the Western world looks at Egypt dumbfounded, the so-called Arabic Street (hah!) actually believe this tripe.

For the TSA, the hits keep on coming
Most stories, and therefore the public pressure that may be generated by them, generally only last a few days. On the net, there is generally the ‘story of the week’ that usually lasts from just a few days to maybe a week. If the print or tv media really picks it up usually a few more days are added as the blogs feed off the press and the press feeds off the blogs. In many stories there is some sort of closure in which the ‘issue’ is somehow resolved or the public at large is not really affected. Here we have an increasingly outraged public up against an immovable government behemoth. And no resolution is in sight. This gives the TSA story legs that is now perpetuated as every new TSA bungle makes national news and then traverses the blog and facebook rounds. The TSA, and the administration, has already lost the public relations battle in regards to this and contributes even more to the disgust and distrust that Americans feel towards the government and undermines what little credibility it still maintains.

VIDEO: George Dalaras & Goran Bregović – Nychta
It’s been some time since someone posted any music here, so I thought I’d post a couple of tracks. This first one comes from a rather nice Balkan pairing: George Dalaras is something like the Bruce Springsteen (gone dark) of Greece, and he is paired with a legendary rocker from the former Yugoslavia, and now both an incredible performer on his own and soundtrack composer, Goran Bregović. This piece, Nychta, mixes elements of Serbian, Greek and Gypsy music, with some nice shifts in time signature, that could almost pass for a Balkan rhumba. Enjoy!
Sarah Palin’s Alaska… and Alaska Overview.
I had it recorded as I had something going on, but it is put on hold. So I am watching it and smiling. It is cute so far… but I want to make sure that people know, Sarah and her Family have it a little better than most Alaskans. Most Alaskans do not have a small airplane.
So watching the fishing was cute. Piper saying she was never going to catch a fish … was typical for most Alaskans. It is a streak thing, sometimes you catch bunches and other times you don’t catch for years it seems like. I remember having a 2 yr run with very few salmon caught. It is okay Piper.. most people will understand! But watching the bears was fun and made me smile. Both small brown bears, one with cubs and all very hungry.
On too where Sarah and Family are going to be climbing. Well the Alaska Mountaineering School is in Talkeetna and is renowned to be a very good climbing school. You meet people from all over the world due to climbers going for the gold. It is a neat little building. As it is not huge. And it is on coveted land as it is across the tracks.. on the east side of Talkeetna. The little shots you got of Talkeetna as of the little town and the Fairveiw Inn. If you want to learn some cool history, look for the book “The Mystery of the Cache Creek Murders” by Roberta Reeve Sheldon. She tells the story of Talkeenta and Trapper Creeks first Serial Murders…. which the FBI couldn’t investigate as the start of WWII. Or google Roberta Reeve Sheldon…. as she is a bit of history all herself.
So Sarah Palin is climbing the glacier. Well I have to say I would be a tad worried. It is a tad slick due to the rain. It rained and rained and rained up here this summer. It was the rainiest ever for south central for decades. But Ruth Glacier is very pretty and you can only get there by little airplane.
Now here is a little trivia that NO ONE will tell you about on TLC or possibly even on any other blogs. The guy that takes Sarah Palin and Todd up in his plane, is a well-known trapper who has taken many other men and women all over and in the bush. But can you guess who he is?
All in All it was cute. It was cute. Any other Alaskan who saw it, please chime in and tell use what you thought as well.

November 19th was the 147th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. So, to help keep history alive and to honor the memories of the great many who died on those battlefields in perhaps this nation’s most heartbreaking war, I give you a fine reading of that most famous of speeches by actor Jeff Daniels.
The TSA Is Out Of Control
Because I firmly believe in beating a dead horse. And because this is the internet’s overblown topic of the week. And the outrage of the month. And an outrage that the American people need to collectively reject. Idiocy and pretend security shenanigans in a PC world end up looking like this. Actually having an effective, Israeli-type security model would require intelligent people making actual, common-sense decisions on the spot and trusting security professionals to make real world decisions and perhaps profiling actual, potential terrorist suspects. But in America, such simple concepts were jettisoned long ago. And we wonder why civilization crumbles, culture disintegrates, the government can’t do anything right, and logic and common sense molder in the grave.
Vote Republican for the Very First Time
Hey liberals, do you really care about minorities? If so, then why not support those who have recently won (and now more importantly are seeking) leadership positions?
And to minorities (Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, etc), do you honestly think the Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton types truly care whether you succeed or not?
Get real. Dependency is their game, largely because they make money off of it. Money from those they dupe.

The conspiracy nuts are out on this story, and my favorite Russian blog, La Russophobe, has yet to comment on this momentous prisoner snag, but nailing Viktor Bout on arms smuggling charges (namely trying to sell them to the Colombian terrorist group FARC) has a sweet taste to it. There are many in Africa and Asia as well who are celebrating the capture of this fiend, and Russia is quaking in her boots because Bout will probably sing like a canary about how his government aided arms sales to despots.

Most of my friends know I lived in the Balkans for a pretty good stretch. From first-hand experience, I can relate to you that while Macedonia looked like a mediocre model of governance, they were miles ahead of the union-infested Greek economic picture even as far back as 2003, when I left. It has gotten worse, and it’s beginning to look this bad in California. Pity us. As I side note, it was nice to read that Austria told Greece to get stuffed on trying to mooch in the form of higher taxes.

This gentleman’s blog post on his fun at the airport has received over 5,000 comments and his calm but brave stand against fairly invasive airport security procedures has made him a Robin Hood for a great many Americans who are just fed up with it all. Pay special attention to the multitude of threats he received and the statements about him ‘giving up his rights’ that pepper the account. Kind of makes you wonder what they would do if entire flights just refused to participate in technological strip-searches and government groping exercises.

Regular visitors to this blog (all seven of them) are undoubtedly aware of the rumors circulating capital hill: the Dems are furious with Obama and they’re worried he’s destroying the party. Monday began with the start of the lame duck Congress, and fresh crop of rumors that all is not well at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
One of the consequences that comes with pissing off your own is that they start leaking to the press. This is the same press that acts more like the Palace Guard than the fifth estate, but it’s not 1981 and the days of the big three networks anymore – leakers gots options – lots of em. And what are they leaking?

Glenn Beck vs. George Soros (Who should be commended, defended or suspended?)
SodaHead asks, “Should Beck Be Suspended for His Comments About Soros ‘Sending Jews to Death Camps’?”
Beck is being vilified for exposing the facts about Soros’ boyhood in Hungary. At that time the circumstances of Soros’ survival required complicity with the anti-Jewish activities of his guardian. Fast forward 60+ years, Soros backs Barack Obama (and just about every other pinko cause he can find). Of course the man is the archetypal elite, so why would anyone be surprised. At the back of my Bible we know the world is going to oppose Israel. The real problems are that 1) Soros is, himself, a Jew, and 2) anyone who criticizes the elite will pay dearly.

Operation Christmas Child – 2010
For the second year in a row I am an “official” volunteer project leader for Operation Christmas Child. I’ve been in overdrive for the last two weeks. My youngest daughter has been faithfully helping me organize, supplement, assemble, and inspect the many boxes now coming into the house. And my wife has been busy gift wrapping each one so it looks like a true Christmas present one would find under the tree. Thanks to the generosity of my church and Reconciliation Ministries I have 53 finished boxes in my family room with more on the way. It is encouraging and touching to see the giving and sharing of others to bless a child they will never see or meet in this life.

Declaration of Independence Carved in Wood by Navy Veteran
He started the Declaration of Independence in 2000 and worked on it, little by little, over the years until it was near completion. A stroke, though, less than a year ago put the project, and his life, in peril.
Luckily, Kested emerged from his ordeal far better than some others do. He can no longer feel any sensation in one hand, but is able to still use it and still has a strong grip. His speech is slower and he sometimes struggles to find words, but ultimately he’s made a good recovery, he said. After some therapy he was able to resume work on his project, carving the final bits of punctuation and adhering them to the birch background.
He said he hopes his experience inspires others who deal with a similar issue.
“I feel really blessed. I want people to know that you can still do things, that they shouldn’t give up, they should keep on going,” he said.

Well, the Washington Post puts up a bit of a shocker in the editorial section today, via Instapundit:
To be a great president, Obama should not seek reelection in 2012. “We do not come to this conclusion lightly. But it is clear, we believe, that the president has largely lost the consent of the governed.”
It’s a rare day indeed when this Beast agrees with the WaPo, but he’s willing to bring the thought a step farther: to be a really awesome President, Obama should resign now!
UPDATE: To be fair (as pointed out by the readers at Free Republic), this is not theWashington Post’s Editorial opinion, it’s an Op-ed by two Dem pollsters. But WaPo did publish it, which is yet another sign that that behind the scenes, Dems are very unhappy with their Lord and Master.
While we’re at it, there’s more on the Palace revolt in progress, also via Instapundit: Joe Scarboro says top Senate Democrats have told him Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing.
As the Beast noted in a prior post, the cracks are widening and the leaks floweth forth.
So, how about that election in Alaska?
I have been laying low, so to speak. Watching the election and mainly busy with life. But no one can tell me that the Senate Race here in Alaska has not been interesting. I have seen on blogs all over the internet, watching people talk about how people hate Alaska now just for this one election, but always praise Sarah Palin when it comes to anything. Umm…. where is Sarah from again?

How about instead of hiking gas taxes, we sell off federal energy exploration leases? How about we cut all federal funding to groups like Planned Parenthood, public broadcasting, the National Endowment for the Arts, and all other similarly questionable entities? How about we de-certify public employee unions, as Mitch Daniels has done in Indiana, to reduce the pressure to keep paying federal workers more and more while the private sector lags? How about we just cut federal spending across the board? How about a little common sense?
The best thing we can do to stabilize and repair the country’s fiscal health is to get rid of the current administration, but that’s still a couple years off.

Michelle Obama dons Muslim garb
And she doesn’t look happy about it at all. Heck, at home we can’t even get her to wear sleeves, not look like a black widow, or otherwise dress appropriately at even rather solemn and serious occasions like Congressional Medal of Honor ceremonies. But she takes one foot onto the soil of a Muslim nation… Must have been that NASA outreach to followers of Islam thing kicking in. Dare I say it reminds me of a loose-fitting Hillary Clinton pantsuit?

As for another voice…I know some don’t care for Glenn Beck. I ask, though, for everyone to dvr or watch him all this week. The facts, not just from what he says, but what can be researched, is eye opening and quite frankly, frightening unless we do something about what shall come. Economists state that food inflation shall sky rocket come 2011. I’m not sure how we can all form a liveable budget if milk is nearly $25 a gallon or some God forsaken thing.
I don’t want to speak for Beck’s research, for no matter what is said, there are those that think Glenn Beck is a lunatic simply attempting to promote his books and place fear within the “misguided”. Research what is being said, to those skeptics out there, and to Beck’s trusting listeners. He’s asked for every one of his viewers to reach out to the circles of friends, family, and even our strangers to watch what his team has investigated for this week.
I’m doing my part, if only a small role, to help wise us up and save our country. I’ve never been one for conspiracy theories or wanting to believe that our precious, priviledged American way of life is on a last leg.
People…please. This progressive movement, of which I have been a sleeping giant to, is going to kill our finances, our securities, our way of life, and our entire American culture as we know it. The Republicans in the house majority have a lot of work to do. Real work, real actions, real plans! Republicans…don’t give us any lip service, or you will be blamed for all of the failures to come…that’s how the picture will be formed.
Hats off to this Marine. Hats off to people like Glenn Beck shouting a voice to be listened to. Whether you view for entertainment or information, for God’s sakes, watch his show this week and let’s at least take some notes to learn from.

Bush defends his controversial White House policies
I only have three words for our esteemed 43rd President of the United States, whom I dearly miss in some (certainly not all) regards: WHAT KEPT YOU?!?!?!
I understand why President Bush wanted to stay out of the fray. The man possesses integrity and class. He has proven to be a good character, unlike Jimmy Carter, who can’t seem to shut his increasingly insignificant pie-hole three decades after embarrassing himself as the weakest Leader of the Free World this nation has produced in the last 100 years. At least Bill Clinton, for all his greasiness, has enough snake-like charm to pull it off. Bush, however, would have been right to have been more vigorous in defending himself. His silence placed him in the scope of attack dogs posing as journalists, as well as the usual leftist operatives slandering a good man. The BBC’s Mark Mardell, who never seems to get things about America right, writes on the former POTUS here, while OzarksFirst.com figures the release of his book Decision Points will improve his image.

AMC Horror Series “The Walking Dead” Breaks Cable TV Records

And after only two episodes has already been renewed for a second season! From the site:
AMC announced today the renewal of The Walking Dead for a 13-episode second season. Since debuting Sun., Oct. 31, The Walking Dead has broken ratings records, with the series reaching more Adults 18 to 49 than any other show in the history of cable television.
This is classy stuff, believe it or not. 10 pm Sunday will never be the same.

As a teenager, I have to admit that, though I was not at all a metal-head (my thing was more punk and “Industrial” music of the mid-80s), I did have a soft spot for Judas Priest. Thanks to cartoons like “Beavis and Butt-Head, one can still rock out on occasion to “Breaking The Law” from time to time. What caught me by surprise was that Rob Halford, the extremely campy singer of said Priest, is a practicing Christian. An interesting fun-fact.

Well, eat and figure out together how we’re going to get our country back on track.
Republicans are promising “no compromise” on repealing health care reform and giving another big tax bailout to millionaires.1 We need to show President Obama that we want him to fight—and that we’ll help him win if he does.
So on Sunday, November 14, we’re organizing “Potlucks for Progress” around the country to share some home cooking and figure out together what comes next.

Hosting a potluck is super-easy and fun. All you have to do is provide the space and some plates and silverware to eat with, and we’ll do all the recruitment to let people know the event is happening.
The best time to hold your potluck is at 7 p.m. Eastern Time (that’s 4 p.m. Pacific Time), when we’ll have a live conference call with a special guest (to be announced).
Lots of people need a breather after working day and night for weeks or months. But this is no time to let down our guard. The Republicans have already shown that they will do nothing but obstruct and attack. We need to show President Obama that if he fights back, progressives will stand behind him.

The Next Set Of Cracks Appear…
You don’t send scores of your faithful blithely off the electoral precipice without consequences.
Last January, in the thick of the Obamacare debate, nervous Blue Dog Democrats met with Obama and communicated their unease. They specifically brought up Clinton’s electoral backlash in 1994, caused – to some degree – by Clinton’s failed effort to do exactly what Obama was having them do now: pass a healthcare plan. According to retiring democratic Rep Marion Berry, as reported in ADG (subscription only, but here’s a good link from Politico to get the general gist), Obama dismissed their concerns, claiming his popularity would provide them adequate political cover. He told told jittery Dems “Well, the big difference here and in ’94 was you’ve got me.”
Fat load of good it did. One imagines Napoleon said the same to his generals before he invaded Russia. Yes, the Dems passed Obamacare, and yes, the French captured Moscow, but a month later Napoleon marched back out again and ultimately earned himself a long vacation at Elba. Now Obama’s in India and the word around the capital is the Dems sent him there to be rid of him while they assess the wreckage.
According to sources close to the White House, who put themselves in great danger by even talking to members of the media, the plans to have Obama leave for a visit to India, Pakistan, Indonesia, South Korea, and Japan are an attempt to get Obama out of the country while top Democrats can sort through the political disaster created for the party by Obama’s increasingly detached-from-reality presidency.
Expect the trickle of leaks to go a-gusher in the coming days. Now that Obama has lost his rainmaker mojo and earned much enmity within his own party (not just for political setbacks, but also for his pettiness, arrogance and condescension), insiders have already started scheduling private meetings with journalists who have suddenly started paying attention for the first time in three years. The party is terribly alarmed at the prospect that Obama’s doing serious, long-term damage to the brand. The kind of damage that could take decades to undo. And that’s why the Obami are in India playing Sultan: the Dems are deciding what to do about him.
The Democrats stuck with Clinton in ’94 and they may well decide to stick with Obama too, but judging by the number of rats already swimming away from the sinking ship, the rest could decide to leap over the rail before they all get sucked down together. Clinton didn’t have a rival Hilary equivalent waiting to challenge him – Obama does. And there’s signs that our POTUS is coming a bit unglued. Again from Opinion Maker:
On October 5, Obama was addressing Fortune magazine’s “Most Powerful Women” summit in Washington, DC. During the middle of Obama’s speech, the presidential seal fell off the podium. Publicly, Obama took the incident as a joke, but WMR has learned from White House insiders that Obama went on a tirade after the incident, accusing White House staffers of purposely not anchoring the seal to the podium. The White House supplies all the podiums and seals at all presidential addresses and the seal is usually well-anchored with four screws affixed to the podium. Obama reportedly “freaked out” and accused White House staffers of engaging in a conspiracy against him. The presidential tirade over such a trivial matter was not lost on senior administration officials who have witnessed Obama’s lackadaisical behavior during the consideration of much weightier issues, for example, the war in Afghanistan.
And it gets worse:
Some White House staffers have described a “reign of terror” in the White House over continued leaks and a troika of leadership that is making decisions without any input from the president. The troika reportedly consists of First Lady Michelle Obama, presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett, and the president’s mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, who resides in the White House.Not to be deterred, some White House staffers have sought out journalists and have arranged to meet them at nearby Starbuck’s cafes to discretely convey to them inside information about the current disarray within the Obama administration. Some staffers have personally born the brunt of Obama’s temper and witnessed his extreme narcissistic behavior. WMR has also learned from White House sources that Obama is taking prescription anxiety medication.
We are starting to see a portrait of a man who is quite brittle, prone to fits of rage, and disengaged. Up til now all political calculus as to how Democrats should respond to their electoral rout last Tuesday has been based on the assumption that Obama is, at least, right in his mind. That may not be true, and if it isn’t we may be in for a big surprise this winter.

6. I voted Democrat because I’m way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves.
5. I voted Democrat because I believe that people who can’t tell us if it will rain on Friday can tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don’t start driving a Prius.

Mid-term elections open thread
Just thought I’d provide a place to discuss any results or thoughts on the mid-term elections. I’m glad to see a Senator Rubio and a Senator Paul in the US Senate. Lost West Virginia where I was hopeful and O’Donnell went down in predicatable defeat. The Senate will remain in Democratic hands but I suspect we may be seeing a blowout in the House. A good night to be a Republican and a conservative.

The Unanimous Declaration
of the Thirteen United States of America
When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. –Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavored to prevent the population of these states; for that purpose obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, and raising the conditions of new appropriations of lands.
He has obstructed the administration of justice, by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers.
He has made judges dependent on his will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislature.
He has affected to render the military independent of and superior to civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation:

For protecting them, by mock trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these states:

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow citizens taken captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare, is undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have we been wanting in attention to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies in war, in peace friends.
We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the authority of the good people of these colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as free and independent states, they have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do. And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

I never tire of Prager. Listen also to his comments about the United States vs. the United Nations on increasing good on Earth, and electing Iran (of all countries) to the commission on the status of women.

Folks, Abraham Lincoln said that the United States is the last best hope for Earth… for mankind. It will not be the last best hope for mankind if it becomes like western Europe. Nobody has ever said Norway is the last best hope for mankind. I know I’ll be attacked as anti-Norwegian because anything that we say is race-based. So with the risk of being considered anti-Scandinavian in my essence, may I say that nobody says Sweden, Norway or Denmark is the last best hope for mankind, nor have they said that since 1603 about France. And so it is only being said about the USA— this is the force for good on this Earth. It’s not peace activists that liberated Auschwitz. It’s military people who liberated Auschwitz…

I’m a bit surprised my fellow Con-Clubbers haven’t tackled this topic yet. It seems to be all the rage amongst fellow Conservatives, and all the cool kids are talking about it. And yes, I am in full agreement with Sarah Palin calling some members of the news media ‘corrupt bastards‘. They will have hell to pay soon.

Why you should vote for Republicans
John Boehner, the presumptive replacement for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, makes his case as to why voters should go Elephant instead of Jackass. He makes some interesting points, but the tone of the article fails to inspire. Thankfully, a bunch of people who are really pissed off this year will be moving mountains this year. This will allow the Republicans a chance to make amends for their feebleness when they last had power.

AMC announced today the renewal of The Walking Dead for a 13-episode second season. Since debuting Sun., Oct. 31, The Walking Dead has broken ratings records, with the series reaching more Adults 18 to 49 than any other show in the history of cable television.
