Our False Sense of Security As Americans, we have historically enjoyed the luxury of believing things always happen to the other guy. Whether that sense of security has been within our homes and families or our nation as a whole, we have been perhaps the most blessed country on the face of the earth. This [...]

Dave’s Quote of the Day
Feb 27
“Why do leftists hate social conservatives so much? Simple: because they have a ludicrous caricature in their heads of a planned Christian theocracy in which they’d no longer be able to get their pornography, abortion-as-birth-control, and PG-13 rated movies and TV shows. You think I’m kidding about this but I’m not.” -by David Swindle
The Plague
Feb 27
We see evidence of the Plague all around us. A recent book called Ruins of Detroit by Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre illustrates evidence of the Plague quite well. Far from being a voice alone in the wilderness, though, I find prophets of Doom all around me. There was a band out a few years back [...]
Since We’re Screwed Anyway, I Have Some Suggestions
Feb 27
So it seems the dollar’s days are numbered. With the latest numbers from around the reporting agencies, it can really only be a matter of time. Between the bailouts, Obamacare, and the government covering the shortcomings of Fannie and Freddie, the federal government should be broke by late next year (if not sooner). From everything [...]

A west Texas view

To really understand Texas, you need to understand its divisions. topically and geographically. Texas is divided into several areas and each has its own favor or culture. Montana Nullification Legislation

An email from a reader I felt was worth reprinting here. Hi Dave, The Montana legislature meets for about 3 months every two years. This is a great way to limit government. Agent Orange Tribute

What’s kind of funny about the surf punk band Agent Orange is that they have a great studio sound and have had a decent following for over twenty years. You then go to see them live and it’s like going to band practice. I’ve been to two of their shows. At the first one I [...]
Some good news for Colorado gun owners

It Takes Money to Make Money…Or How I Make 1.3 Million Per Day
Remember that little investment that the Oracle of Omaha made in Goldman Sachs in 2008 to help ally the fear that the entire banking industry was collapsing? 5 billion dollars of perpetual reserved shares.
But Mr. Buffett’s investment came with a heavy cost, as many lifelines do: 10 percent annual dividend payments. That comes out to more than $1 billion thus far — or more than $1.3 million a day.
You know what they say, it takes money to make money.

Another Scandal in the OCA
Stories like this frustrate the heck out of me. We have such a scandal here, yet we have such poor leadership in the OCA. It’s patently obvious that our leadership is not really ready to develop a proper Orthodox Church in America yet. Thanks to John Gfoeller for breaking such bad news. His post is displayed below:

[Video] John Carpenter – ‘One Last Long Goodbye’ (Echo, Los Angeles 2/14/11)
John Carpenter and his crew are about the freshest thing to come into Los Angeles in quite some time. The scene is simply better for them being here. They tore up The Echo on Valentine’s Day, and Joe Albanese, erstwhile drummer of Carpenter’s band, sent over this clip: Cross-posted at A Miscellany Of Tasteful Music.
[Video] Francisco Guerrero Marín – "Ariadna" (1984)
We covered a Renaissance composer with the same name in the previous post. This one was a 20th Century avant-garde composer who died at the age of 47 in 1997, which was a pity, as he was beginning to look like one of the leading lights in contemporary classical music. Here is a sample of his work: Cross-posted at A Miscellany Of Tasteful Music.

The great dying scribe, Christopher Hitchens, really lays into President Obama on his rather tepid and pathetic war of words against Muammar Ghaddafi. I can see why young Libyans might hate us at this moment.
The Party Of Civility Shows Us How It’s Done
In the wee hours today the Republican majority in the Wisconsin Assembly passed Governor Walker’s budget cuts bill just before the Dems were able to march out. Caught by suprise, the Dems erupted in rage and rushed the Republicans as they left the chamber, screaming and chanting “Shame!”.
Imagine the consequences if the GOP had behaved that way after the Dems passed Obamacare.
UPDATE: A fuller description of Dem’s idea of civility comes from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:
“Shame! Shame! Shame!” Democrats shouted in the faces of Republicans as the GOP lawmakers quietly filed off the floor and a police officer stood between opposing lawmakers.
“Cowards all! You’re all cowards,” yelled Rep. Brett Hulsey (D-Madison) as another Democrat tried to calm him down.
Most Republicans had no comment on the vote afterward and some were escorted out under police protection. Earlier in the night, Majority Leader Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) said that Democrats had been given more than two full days and nights to make their case – effectively turning the debate into a filibuster – and that Republicans had done nothing wrong.
“It seems clear our side wants to vote and I challenge anyone watching to say we have not held out for an adequate debate,” Suder said.
“The democrats were clearly stalling,” said Rep. Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc). “That’s why Assembly rules allow for a vote on final passage. We took that vote and did what the people of this state asked us to do on Nov. 2 – get spending under control.”
“…escorted out under police protection.” This must be some permutation of “civil” the Beast has yet to encounter. As the saying goes, if it weren’t for double standards, liberals would have no standards at all.

Invoking Hitler

In the past three years I have seen more comments comparing political statesmen to Adolf Hitler than I can count. For a split second I asked myself why, but then remembered an article I read almost 13 years ago that has stayed with me – and with the internet (on it’s original page, no less) to this day. The article was entitled “How to Argue Effectively” and can be found here .
What’s interesting to me is that invoking hitler is mentioned – but it is mentioned as the last resort, the big guns, the end all, be all finisher of arguments. And while the article itself may be satirical in nature, it is evident to me that the latest round of comparisons to Hitler is just that – a last ditch effort at winning an argument destined to fail.

Wisconsin as Pearl Harbor
President Roosevelt used oil policy to goad Japan into attacking; the Wisconsin governor’s threat to union power has brought the Federal government into battle, one that is spreading into other states and will expand until it is, like WWII, settled one way or another.
One may argue the propriety of the administration in power joining the national Democrats and their unions to intimidate state governments on such strictly local matters as budget and work rules but that came when the DNC and the Obama campaigners went to Wisconsin to help create and pay for Egyptian-style mobs in Madicon.
It puts the Wisconsin legislators who wish to offend neither their constituents nor their national party into the no-win middle that accounts for their absence from their workplace. For short: cowardice.
The longer view isn’t reassuring: State budgets must be addressed, states can’t print money. Tax increases enough to cover the gaps will, as Connecticut is about to show us, prove problematic both for state treasuries and at elections. Spending cuts, even in the face of unions (now maybe become the low-hanging fruit) seem more likely to help. Those require emasculation of the public unions. Temporarily overcoming them won’t do; it’s temporary.
The Feds can’t afford to buy the states anymore but neither can the DNC afford to give up its union allies. Civil wars are usually the bloodiest; this could be interesting.
Another Islamofascist terror attack thwarted
This time it’s completely new and different from all the other attempted terrorist attacks. No, wait, I’m wrong, it’s almost exactly the same. It just another angry young Moslem male from Saudi Arabia trying his best to kill a bunch of Americans. This follower of the religion of peace did everything but run down to FBI headquarters and turn himself in. Luckily one of my fellow citizens put “care enough to act” into effect and pointed him out to law enforcement.
“You who created mankind….grant me martyrdom for Your sake and make jihad easy for me only in Your path,” he wrote.
Now remember, “jihad” means nothing more than “struggle,” not “killing infidels in the name of Allah.” This is, after all, the Religion of Peace.

Collectivist Tyranny
“If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people, under the pretence of taking care of them, they must become happy. … I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.” –Thomas Jefferson

It may look more like Socialist protests in Greece or France, but the latest incarnation of collectivist insurrection is under way in Madison, Wisconsin, spreading like a plague into Indiana, Ohio and other Midwest states.

Saving the Spotted Owl
For no reason I know of, the thought of endangered species came to mind on Tuesday morning. Then I saw this article and started wondering about synchronicity. I’m sure it’s just coincidence, but the entire story is so improbable that it seems like an April Fool’s Day joke. I don’t even know whether to laugh or cry or howl in rage.
Back in the late 80s/early 90s, the Great Spotted Owl provided employment for way too many environmental activists and caused unemployment for way too many loggers. We were assured that if the logging industry would stop cutting down trees, the Spotted Owls would come back and everything would be fine. That didn’t happen.
Replacing junk science with real research, we now realize that the Spotted Owl decline had nothing to do with logging and everything to do with its raptor rival, the Barred Owl. It’s bigger and stronger and not so picky about where it nests and hunts. The Spotted Owl can’t compete, so it continues to die out.
The reasonable response to this news by the environmental activists would be, “Oh, we’re sorry, we were mistaken. Go ahead and start logging again, and include those 8.6 million acres that we took away from you through the courts.” Ha-ha, silly person, you’re expecting a reasonable response? Think again, and you would never in a million years come up with the real story.
The real story is that there are plans in the works to save the Spotted Owl at any cost, including killing barred owls. This makes absolutely no sense. It’s not like trying to eradicate zebra mussels or protect against Med Flies. The Barred Owl is native to North America, and it is not a pest. Basically they are planning to kill big, strong, beautiful birds who play a vital role in our ecosystem. The government report calls it barred owl management. I call it needless slaughter and animal cruelty.
Here’s an alternative plan: let nature take its course. Back off, get out of the forest, let the Spotted Owl and the Barred Owl compete naturally, and may the best raptor win. According to the report, if we take no further action, we will be saving $147.1 million over 30 years that could better be spent on maintaining bridges or upgrading the national power grid (or building bullet trains). It’s apparent that the Spotted Owls are going to become extinct anyway, because they can’t compete. Hey, it’s survival of the fittest, right?
This brings me back to the point of my initial thoughts on Tuesday. What is the big problem with the extinction of a species like the Great Spotted Owl? If it’s replaced by its bigger, stronger cousin the Barred Owl in a process of natural selection, then the forest becomes a better place with not so many rodent pests running around. How many billion dollars will we spend to keep this bird (or any of several oddly-shaped snails or weirdly-colored mice) alive?
The Left’s Obsession with Fox News
FOX NEWS. Why are you liberals so obsessed with it? Let’s set aside the fact that the other 24-hour news channels have a liberal bias while Fox pundits lean to the right for a minute; I understand the politics. What I want to know is, why is Fox News the devil incarnate to you people while the other networks are just “opinionated?”
I watched a clip last night of an overly crazed liberal screaming “FOX LIES!” over and over at the top of his lungs. As is usually the case, when asked for an example, he had nothing. He wouldn’t even stop screaming long enough to give it a shot.
Here’s another question: Have any of you actually watched Fox News enough to have an informed opinion or are you just parroting what you hear from the likes of Keith Olbermann and Bill Maher? My experience with liberals suggests the latter. Lots of hemming and hawing when I ask for examples. Many of you tell me you watch Fox, but I have my doubts.
One more question: Why do you assume that conservatives are mindless programmed followers of Fox News? Most conservatives I know are pretty well-read people. We’re also exposed to your side of the issues on the evil network on a daily basis.
As much as you detest Bill O’Reilly, I challenge you to give me an example of one program on another network that provides the same amount balance of opinion and panelists as is the case on The Factor every night. You might also check out Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace. Once again, you’ll see a balanced debate on the issues. No name calling, condescension or character assassination. You might actually find that refreshing for a change.
While I eagerly await your responses, here’s my assessment of your obsession. It boils down to two things: Organizations like MSNBC and Media Matters do what they do for ratings and website traffic. (Check out Media Matters here for wall-to-wall Fox bashing, it’s hysterical.) I know what you’re thinking; your pundits on MSNBC are lucky if they get 20% of the audience The Factor enjoys, so how could ratings have anything to do with it? Simple: while you guys watch your pals in much smaller numbers than we do, you are a rabidly loyal, predictable audience. Liberals love preaching to the choir.
The second reason is just as obvious. As is usually the case with the left, it’s much easier to attack those who disagree with your ideology than it is to have a level-headed, substantive debate on the issues. After all, liberalism is in large part defined by emotionalism. There is also a degree of hypocritical condescension among your elites. If we don’t agree with you, we’re stupid. So be it.
While your attacks on all things Fox are predictable and do get a bit boring from time to time, I urge you to keep it coming. It makes for great blogging content, as well as a good laugh here and there.

Going Ceausescu – Article Round Up on the Libyan Revolution
“I will not leave the country, I will stay until the last drop of blood is spilled. Those who defy me will be executed. I will not leave. I will die as a martyr. Damn those who try to stir unrest.” – Gaddafi
“We are not Egypt. We are not Tunisia. We have guns and we will use them. Instead of 84 deaths (as in Egypt), there will be thousands of deaths. Rivers of blood will run through all the cities of Libya. We will keep our country. We will not leave.” – Gaddafi’s next eldest son, Saif El-Islam Gaddaf
In less than a week Libya went from Egyptian style street protests to full-scale civil war. In a rapid meltdown senior members of the Libyan regime have resigned and publicly condemned Khadafi, his army units are picking sides, he delivered a crazy speech on state television, scores of bodies litter the street of Tripoli, rebellious elements now control at least 30% of the country and it appears mercenaries are the only real force keeping him propped up at all. The ‘February 17th’ revolution turned out to not be a paper tiger at all.

Wal-Mart Declines – No Surprise
I wonder why the authors of this article won’t speculate on Americans’ distaste with Wal-Mart and its Chinese base… Wal-Mart is blaming the economy for lost revenue, but history has shown that Wal-Mart thrives during economic down-turns! What could this possibly mean, when Americans turn away from Wal-Mart when they’re down on their luck? Don’t expect American patronage to ever grow…
The Hairy Beast: “On” Wisconsin
The white house is backing off from events in Madison. From the Washington Examiner:
White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer is claiming that “This is a Wisconsin story, not a Washington one,” contradicting the Washington Post’s reporting that the president and his political apparatus has gotten deeply involved in the effort. But Pfeiffer fails to acknowledge that unions, particularly in the public sector, and President Obama’s apparatus are the same thing, having worked to get out the vote for Democrats for years.
The Democrats’ political tin ear, evident for the past two years, is on full display. Maybe they thought the sight of raging public sector employees shirking work to screech for more of Wisconsin voter’s pay would warm Wisconsonian hearts, but it hasn’t. Recent polls show about half the voters stand with Gov. Wilder, and 35% with the Unionistas. That’s a recipe for disaster. When private employees bargain for higher wages and benefits, they can at least argue they’re after a larger share of the profits their labors create. Public employees can’t say that. When they want more money it doesn’t come off the spread sheet at some billion dollar corporation, it comes directly out of the pockets of fellow workers, most of whom do not share the same level of income the public employees get! And unlike the demonstrators and the Wisconsin Democratic legislators now in hiding at Scottish Hooters in Illinois, you can be certain that the taxpayers of this state get up every day and go to work. They have taxes to pay.
Last November the voters turned out the Dems en masse. Now the Republicans are in power and they’re doing just what they promised to do. The mood of the nation is on the GOP side of this issue and one has to wonder what advantage the Dems thought they’d get for running counter to the will of the people once again. On the other hand, they’re Dems, so maybe there wasn’t much thought involved.

Gaddafi loyalists launch attacks against civilians as conflict in Libya escalates
A very fast-moving story and the bloodiest revolution we have seen as of yet in this winter of discontent in the Middle East. Libya is basically experiencing a full-scale revolt and that old snake of the desert is holding on by the skin of his teeth. We’ll have to see what tomorrow brings.
Gaddafi loyalists launch attacks against civilians as conflict in Libya escalates
In Tripoli, the capital, residents reported seeing heavily armed mercenaries hunting down demonstrators as buildings burned, looters ransacked police stations, and fighter jets and helicopter gunships rained ammunition from the skies.
Senior Libyan officials and diplomats resigned in outrage over the attacks against civilians, while soldiers fled their units and joined the opposition. Ibrahim Dabbashi, Libya’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, accused Gaddafi of killing his own people and urged the international community to act against the regime.
“He has to get out. Either he has to get out or the Libyan people will kick him out,” Dabbashi said in an interview with the television network al-Jazeera. “It is the end of the game.”
Is the Out of Africa Theory Out?
It should be by now. I’ve been preaching this for years, but it’s good to see some scientific evidence to uphold this line of thinking. Nikhil Swaminathan of Scientific American makes a strong case that Europeans came from Asia. Cross-posted at Steinblóm.

One can only hope this is true. Though there was some sort of statement made that Muammar Ghaddafi never left, it wouldn’t be out of line for this cretin to lie about running like a scared girl from his country. May some Libyan with a grievance take this bastard out.

“The New Reagan Revolution”
On my break from work, I decided to visit one of my favorite places in the world: Barnes and Nobles. I could seriously spend forever and a day in there and it wouldn’t be enough. On display, they had several Ronald Reagan books in honor of his recent 100th birthday. I, of course, was drawn in just like many others before me and ended up buying one called The Reagan Revolution. It’s written by his son, Michael Reagan and it had an ”advance praise” as the book cover called it from Rush Limbaugh. I figured it was worth a shot.
So, over the next few weeks, I’ll be reading and commenting on this book and hopefully shedding some light on how “Ronald Reagan’s principles can restore America’s greatness.”
The Hairy Beast: Heap Plenty Cusk – 3 Youtube videos from last weekend (The Winni Derby)

The Beast had never fished with this crew, so the Beast didn’t know what to expect, but Friday afternoon he bundled his son into the Explorer and we headed out for the lake.
The Beast brought his popup shanty and whatnot, been using it to fish local tidal rivers (saltwater ice – scary) for smelts with seaworms. Sweetwater lakes are fairly foreign to me despite it being much safer than the porous saltwater stuff. Not knowing what to expect, he brought it all.

[Poem] ‘Thougts on a wayside shrine’ by Alasdair Sclater
It’s been a good spell since my unofficial bard has made an appearance here:
The shrine stands now
Crucifix strong and standing
Among the snow bound hills
Hills of the Czech Republic
Where it speaks the ancient faith
In our Saviour
Who stands now on the Cross
To remind us of those dark days
Amid the cold and the snowStands the reminder of our Saviour
Crucified for us
In the cold
And in the nakedness of truth
Spoken down the ages
In the wonder of the messageSaviour your form looks so cold
Among the snow racked tempest
Where we celebrate your death and resurrection
And speak again the days
When you hung on the Cross for our sinsCold stands the picture
Of the shrine
That stood so many years
And the tempest of the cold
Rack your gallant form
The sins of man
That visit at every turnAnd all the scene speaks of hardship and sacrifice
The price of sin paid
In the triumph of the ages
That speaks all
In the snows that surround
In the bitter coldAnd the shrine stands a message
A picture too vivid to let go
The form of our Lord so cold
Amid the bitter snow
Of the emotions of the people
Who stood by and watched
Our Saviour put to deathThe years have gone by on this deed
But the shrine still stands
To remind in the winter snow

Bahrain security forces fire on defiant protesters
Poor Bahrainis. They want to eat and have housing, or so report the press. What you really have here is the fact that Shia and Sunni can never live together, and will only work together if the enemy is so hideous that they have no choice. Still, the royal family of Bahrain deserve the chopping block for firing on their citizens indiscriminately. HT: Breitbart.
The Egyptian Military Takes Sides. Not Ours.
Those who were pessimistic about the role Egypt’s military played in the Cairo uprising can now feel justified. The Egyptian Military just allowed the Muslim Brotherhood to allow extremist cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi back into the country. Qaradawi is a noted intellectual inside of Al-Ikhwān, as the Muslim Brotherhood is known in Egypt. That the military have provided a guard for this cretin’s return shows that they are not on the side of democracy, but will be part of aiding the development of a new Islamist state. Woe to Miṣr. Thanks to Dave Reaboi who posted the article at Big Peace.

Wisconsin – Union Mob Article and Video Roundup
The ruckus continues in Wisconsin but the tide of public opinion seems to be turning against the mob now occupying the state legislature. The days of stuffing oneself at the public trough have to come to an end and Republican governors and legislatures are watching this play out with interest. If WI Republican governor Scott Walker and an allied legislature are able to de-fang the public unions in a state that helped birth the ‘progressive’ movement then it can be done most anywhere.
“The accelerating clash between the private and public sectors obviously involves ideology, but a lot of it is simple economic combat. The people who pay for government are struggling with, and beginning to fight against, the unsustainable demands of the people who get paid by government.” – Co State Sen. Shawn Mitchell

Why Do People Who Know The Least Know It The Loudest?
Imagine what you would have thought when you were learning about government in grade school if the teacher had explained, “if a bill is brought before the Senate and your side doesn’t have enough votes to win…the correct thing to do is sneak out of town so that a vote cannot be held.”
As Wisconsin Republicans tried to begin Senate business Thursday, observers in the gallery screamed “Freedom! Democracy! Unions!” Opponents cheered when a legislative leader announced there were not enough Senators present to proceed. Democracy in action? Hardly. More like mob mentality rules.
Some on the left glowingly compared the “day of rage” in Madison to the uprising in Egypt. Nonsense. The correct parallel? The riots in London, where thousands of students protested the government’s plan to increase college tuition rates. Until 1997, British students paid little or nothing to attend college because the government footed the bill through the national budget.
In 2010: France experienced wide-spread demonstrations over a plan to raise the minimum retirement age from 60 to 62, while angry Greeks rioted over the government’s decision to cut spending and increase taxes to prevent the country from going bankrupt.
Obama’s initial take on the events in Wisconsin? Governor Walker’s bill is “an attack on unions.” Much has been written of the president’s desire to remake the United States in the image of Europe. Does he naively believe in the ideals of Noam Chomsky or does he understand the implosion of the European welfare state? Either answer is frightening.
Nanny states are precarious entities at best; once the toothpaste is out of the tube, it’s hard to get it back in.
Stinging quote of the day
“Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working.”
–Unknown, at least as far as I can tell…
You wrestle like a girl
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan (Black, the tournament’s other female entrant) and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times. As a matter of conscience and my faith, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most of the high school sports in Iowa.”
That was the statement released by Iowa homeschooler Joel Northrup after giving up his chance for the state title by refusing to wrestle a girl and forfeiting the match. I guess I kind of have to agree with him personally. If I were put in his place I’d be like “are you fricking kidding me?” Now I’m all for wrestling around with girls but generally speaking not in this particular manner. And grabbing some girls crotch and other sensitive areas on a mat surrounded by hundreds of cheering people may be your idea of a good time but would make me feel a bit uncomfortable.
And can you imagine the poor idiot whose life would be forever ruined if he were to in fact really lose to a girl wrestler? Whoever came up with this idea must really hate high school males with psychopathic passion. Some may choose to disagree with me but the endless attempts to erase the differences between genders does grow tiresome. I’d be just as disgusted at any attempts to let a male join an all female volleyball league or pom pom squad. I’m just sayin’.

As you may have heard, the various unions representing teachers, county, and state employees in Wisconsin have decided that bankrupting the state wasn’t good enough for them and have now decided to emulate their comrades in Greece and try to prevent the Republican governor and legislature from exercising some much delayed and long overdue fiscal [...]
Defiant Student quote of the day
Like Socrates, I am often accused of corrupting minds – in this case though it’s generally older minds, not younger – as I adjunct teach a computer class at a local university. Part of the final exam includes a “what I have learned” portion. It is by far my favorite part of the class for many reasons. Quotes like this are just one.
The last part of our class was about how to use Power Point. I have never used Power Point before but I think I will defiantly use it in the future.
Defiant use of power point is what I am all about people. Bring the defiance. Of course, if they were really defiant, they wouldn’t be using Power Point at all, but that’s another story.
ICE AGENTS AMBUSHED BY DRUG CARTEL UNARMED
US LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS WORKING IN MEXICO PROHIBITED FROM CARRYING WEAPONS
IT’S TIME FOR OBAMA TO MAN UP AND END THE INSANITY
Gunmen who ambushed an SUV carrying two ICE agents,
killing one, knew they were attacking U.S. law enforcement officers, according to U.S. officials. Special Agent Jaime Zapata, 32, died and a second agent, Victor Avila, was wounded when they were attacked after being stopped on a four-lane highway in northern Mexico.
Texas Congressman Michael McCaul, who was briefed on the incident as chairman of the Homeland Security Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee said, “This was an intentional ambush against two United States federal agents. This tragic event is a game changer. The United States will not tolerate acts of violence against its citizens or law enforcement and I believe we must respond forcefully.”
ICE officials have confirmed that U.S. law enforcement agents are prohibited from carrying weapons in Mexico.
While the Congressman and others express anger over the death of a young ICE agent, where is the outrage that should be aimed at our government for allowing unarmed Americans to participate in the Mexican drug war without the ability to defend themselves?
Obama spoke out today against what he called the Wisconsin governor’s “assault on unions.” In 2009, he attacked Cambridge police for behaving “stupidly” while arresting a black Harvard professor before he knew any of the details. He rushes to a microphone to condemn Republican lawmakers every chance he gets.
WHERE IS BARRACK OBAMA’S OUTRAGE OVER THE MURDER OF AN UNARMED AMERICAN LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENT IN MEXICO?
The president should make a strong public statement condemning the murder of Jaime Zapata. He should do what Ronald Reagan would do (if his “Reaganesque” masquerade is to continue) and inform his friend Felipe Calderon (whom he stood with at the White House last year and bashed Arizona) that from now on, ICE AGENTS WILL CARRY WEAPONS.
IT’S TIME FOR THE MADNESS TO STOP. IT’S TIME FOR OBAMA TO MAN UP.
Where should our focus lie?

The following was originally posted at The Daily Vex on February 6, 2011. It was written before Mubarak stepped down and Wisconsin stepped up, but I wanted to share it here because the sentiment bears repeating. Given the new developments in the Middle East and what is happening in the United States, starting with Wisconsin, [...]
Left wing hate speech in Wisconsin
As usual, the left is the source of the worst kind of hate speech, as demonstrated most recently in Wisconsin. This brings back memories of all the “Bushitler” signs during the “antiwar” demonstrations.
Palestine an obsession of radical West, not Arabs
Brendan O’Neill’s article in The Australian is right on target. He mentions Rachel Corrie, and although I feel sad for her family, her death should be educational for future protesters. The moral of her story is…don’t play chicken with a bulldozer, because you will lose.
“Until the Palestinians are given back their rights we’re going to have instability throughout the Middle East,” declared John Pilger on ABC1′s Q & A last night. “That is central to everything.”
Yet, one of the most striking things about the uprising in Egypt was the lack of pro-Palestine placards. As Egypt-watcher Amr Hamzawy put it, in Tahrir Square and elsewhere there were no signs saying “death to Israel, America and global imperialism” or “together to free Palestine”. Instead, this revolt was about Egyptian people’s own freedom and living conditions.
Yet on the pro-Egypt demonstration in London on Saturday, there was a sea of Palestine placards. “Free Palestine”, they said, and “End the Israeli occupation”. The speakers had trouble getting the audience excited about events in Egypt, having to say on more than one occasion: “Come on London, you can shout louder than that!” Yet every mention of the word Palestine induced a kind of Pavlovian excitability among the attendees. They cheered when the P-word was uttered, chanting: “Free, free Palestine!”
This reveals something important about the Palestine issue. In recent years it has moved from the realm of Arab radicalism, where Egyptians and other peoples frequently demanded the creation of a Palestinian state, and has instead become almost the exclusive property of Western middle-class radicals, such as Pilger.
Emptied of its nationalist vigour and militancy, the Palestine problem, it seems, is now of little immediate interest to protesting Arabs and is instead the ultimate cause celebre for Western liberal campaigners who like nothing more than having a victimised people they can coo over.

Welcome Our New Computer Overlords
IBM has bragged to the media that Watson’s question-answering skills are good for more than annoying Alex Trebek. The company sees a future in which fields like medical diagnosis, business analytics, and tech support are automated by question-answering software like Watson. Just as factory jobs were eliminated in the 20th century by new assembly-line robots, Brad and I were the first knowledge-industry workers put out of work by the new generation of “thinking” machines. “Quiz show contestant” may be the first job made redundant by Watson, but I’m sure it won’t be the last.
Skynet, here we come!
Dave’s Quote of the Day
“The Obama way fails. Socialism, authoritarianism, totalitarianism, whatever strain of big-governmentism you want to cite, the evidence is that [it] generates failure, misery, unhappiness, squalor, certainly not prosperity except for the people at the top. So when the evidence is clear that [Obama's] way doesn’t work and you keep doubling down on your way, what does it say? Does it say that you’re stupid, naive, ignorant, unaware, or does it say that you are an arrogant, egotistical guy who thinks [Socialism] works, it just hasn’t been tried by the right guy yet?”

RIP Uncle Leo
Famous for his “Hello!” on Seinfeld, Uncle Leo has said his final goodbye.
‘Seinfeld’ actor Len Lesser dies at 88
LOS ANGELES — Len Lesser, the veteran character actor best known for his scene-stealing role as Uncle Leo on “Seinfeld,” died Wednesday. He was 88.
Lesser’s family said in a statement that he died in Burbank, Calif., from cancer-related pneumonia.
“Heaven got a great comedian and actor today,” his daughter, Michele, said in the statement. “The outpouring of sympathy we’ve already received has been amazing and is so greatly appreciated. Thank you to all the people who helped make my father’s last journey special and surrounded with love.”
Lesser’s lengthy list of television credits included parts on “Get Smart,” “That Girl,” “The Munsters,” “The Monkees,” “The Rockford Files,” “thirtysomething,” “ER,” and “Everybody Loves Raymond,” which featured Lesser in a recurring role as the arm-shaking Garvin. His film credits included “Outlaw Josey Wales,” “Kelly’s Heroes,” “Birdman of Alcatraz” and “Death Hunt.” He most recently appeared on the TV drama “Castle.”
He is survived by his daughter, Michele; son, David; daughter-in-law, Julie; and grandchildren, Jonathan, Kayla, and Mayah.
Argentina Holds Confiscated U.S. Air Force Cargo
Argentina may be the home of my favorite writer of all time (Jorge Luis Borges), as well as the home of tango, but it is also run by an incompetent boob by the name of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, wife of the late Néstor Kirchner, a leftist who managed to not do too much damage to the republic.
Unfortunately, she has decided to pick a fight with the United States over cargo they allowed into the country. This would not end well for the Argentines under a competent leader, but since we’re stuck with the current POTUS, all bets are off.
Yemenis trying to oust leader protest for 5th day
Breitbart and the AP report that Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, is active with protesters trying to dislodge the current regime led by Ali Abdullah Saleh. The contagion spreads.
Iran sending warships through Suez Canal
It looks like Iran wants to test the resolve of the new Egyptian government, as well as Israel’s, by sending a group of ships to move through the Suez Canal. They risk war by doing so, but Iran seems to be willing to take this calculated risk. Surprisingly, no one is reporting on it much here in the United States.
A Good Beginning
When asked what he thought about Western Civilization, Mohandas Ghandi replied, “It’s a good idea.”
He certainly wasn’t the first to take Western Civilization(WC) to the woodshed as there is a long pedigree of anti-Western intellectuals and ideas. Ironically most of it comes from the West. Many of these self-appointed anti-Western critics are doing their best to euthanise WC with an intellectual version of “Stop us before we kill again!”
Although Voltaire loved to denigrate Christianity, it was Nietzche who knew that being anti-Western wasn’t enough, one had to be pro-Eastern. Just as leftists realized that being anti-American wouldn’t bear much fruit, they had to invent a mythological beast called multiculturalism. No thanks, I’ll just take American culture, warts and all.
When one watches the knee-jerk progressives chanting “Hey, hey, ho, ho western culture’s got to go” one cannot help but wonder, How many of the classics of Western culture have they actually perused? Have they followed Dante through the entire Divine Comedy or witnessed a play by Sophocles? Do they really resent Euclid all that much? Or are Augustine’s Confessions completely lost on them?
I believe that we are all well aware of the level of ignorance that abounds in academia even with something as basic as geography.
Progressivism is a weed that believes it can grow taller by chopping away at its own roots. If it was merely an intellectual parlor game that never crawled out of the local coffee bars that would be fine. The problem is that thes ideas find traction among those anointed revolutionaries that plague the arts and the humanities and I know that the disease is spreading.
Why and what are they attacking and is there a decent counter-attack looming? I have reason to believe so. I make myself say half-full rather than half-empty only to convince myself that I am an optimist. Some say I’m just whistling past the graveyard but I think there’s a chance that I actually may be one.
The two essential pillars of WC are Greek Philosophy and Christian Theology. The ancient Greek way of reasoning about the natural world and the Christian faith with its ethos and sense of redemption for a fallen world.
Progressives point at the worst faults of the West like an abusive aunt constantly deriding those messy children that she does not want to admit any relation to.
What to do about the plague of their ideology, one hardly knows where to begin. But begin we must and I shall throw down the gauntlet here: an old battered copy of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. My preferred translation: by Stephen Berg and Diskin Clay.
I don’t know if we’ll save the WC, but it will be a good beginning.
Could Libya be next?

In šāʾ Allāh. The hemmerhoid running and ruining Libya for nearly four decades has brought little to the country but managing to make himself a rich pain in the rear for not only America, but Africa, The Maghreb and the Arab world in general. Good riddance to him if the Libyans can throw him out and kill off any undue radical influence.
The Threat of Civil Unrest in Pakistan and the Davis Case
I’m assuming that poor Pakistan, which has been neglected in the world news cycle as of late, has decided it needs to do something to remain relevant and newsworthy. There is a deep-seated hatred of America and much sympathy with the Taliban and its allies in Al Qaeda. A security officer, Raymond Davis, is the current hatred <em>du jour</em>, having killed two men who had tried, unsuccessfully, to rob him. The terrorist group Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are demanding that Davis be executed. If the Obama Administration decides not to protect their man in Islamabad, it is my hope that Pakistan be incinerated by a more pro-American regime than the one we’re currently stuck with.

I’ve enjoyed reading Niall Ferguson for years, as his history on money has made for wonderful reading. He’s a historian of the first rate, and on the video, he really lets the Obama regime have it in terms of their incompetent Foreign Policy schemes.
DHS has no plans to increase control of the border through FY 2012
On Monday, February 14, the Department of Homeland Security released its Congressional Budget Justification for fiscal year 2012.
Page 560 of the document says this:
CBP Strategic Goal 1: Secure our Nation‘s borders to protect America from the entry of dangerous people and goods and prevent unlawful trade and travel; Objective 1.1: Establish and maintain effective control of air, land, and maritime borders through the use of the appropriate mix of infrastructure, technology, and personnel;
The following, in part, appears on page 552:
FY 2010 accomplishments include:
- Hired an additional 439 agents; and
- Increased the number of border miles under effective control from 939 miles to 1,007.
FY 2011 goals include:
- Maintain effective control of 1,007 miles of border;
- Increase end of FY 2010 staffing by 859 agents to arrive at an end state level of 21,370 agents
- Maintain Border Patrol agent staffing level at 18,415 on the Southwest Border;
- Maintain 2,212 Border Patrol agents along the Northern Border;
FY 2012 goals include:
- Maintain effective control of 1,007 miles of border;
- Maintain 21,370 agents including 2,212 on the Northern Border and 18,415 on the Southwest Border through a mix of new hires and relocations;
Page 709 states the following:
CBP is responsible for protecting more than 3,987 miles of border with Canada, 1,993 miles of border with Mexico, and 2,627 miles of shoreline.
DHS is promising to protect only 11.7% of our 8607-mile border (50.5% of our border with Mexico), and will not commit to increasing that number through the end of fiscal year 2012. The General Accountability Office rates DHS even lower, reporting that only 873 miles (43.8%) are under “operational control” and only 129 miles (6.5%) are under “full control.”
So what shall we do? Commence impeachment proceedings? Start recruiting volunteers for a Border Patrol Auxiliary group? Maybe a march on Washington, D.C. would get someone’s attention.
The problem of sexual violence in Egypt
This is an addendum to the story of the reporter who was sexually assaulted in Cairo during the revolution. One needs to see what kind of culture is being vaunted as ‘revolutionary’. In other news, a douchebag by the name of Nir Rosen lost his job for making some incredibly stupid comments against the reporter in question, Lara Logan, who probably has more balls than this loser. HT: National Review.
Critics Slam U.S. Government, Media for ‘Weak’ Response to Anti-Christian Attacks
It is sickening to see such a pathetic display of cowardice against fellow Christians who endure attack after attack in the Middle East, but am equally disturbed to see such quiet responses from Christians of all denominations. While we are so willing to attack each other on doctrines, others, truly living the faith, are getting massacred. One wonders if Apocalypse has been at hand for decades now, judging by such weak responses. Cross-posted at Apocatastasis.
First Egypt-style protests hit Gadhafi’s Libya
First Egypt-style protests hit Gadhafi’s Libya
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of two Libyan cities overnight in the first sign that the unrest that toppled governments in neighboring Tunisia and Egypt has spread to the North African nation.
Witnesses said protesters in the eastern port city of Benghazi set fire to vehicles and fought with police in a rare outbreak of unrest in the oil-exporting country. They also chanted slogans demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi.
Now here’s a revolution I could get behind wholeheartedly. Once a part of a Colonel’s coup himself the wily old survivor of the desert has held on to power far longer than one would think a half-crazed tin pot dictator would be able to. His old habits of vigorously supporting terror against the West and Israel have mellowed somewhat over the last decade or more but occasionally he continues to be a problem and finds a way to jab his finger into the eye of the West. It will be interesting to see how vigorously the “Guide of the First of September Great Revolution of the Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya” or “Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution” as he is known (he holds no public office or title) would move to put down some serious street protests if they were to develop. The wave of revolutionary fever continues to spread across the Middle East and we will closely monitor the situation over the coming days.

Bahrain protesters take control of main square

We have a new hotspot to watch. Protesters have taken over the main square in Manama, the capital of Bahrain.
‘If not now, when?’ A million furious Italian women protesters demand the head of Berlusconi over ‘underage sex’ scandal
Since we’re throwing allies under the bus, it would make sense that we will watch a sleazy man like Silvio Berlusconi get his rump handed to him by a bunch of mad Italian women. The problem is that the left were ousted after some of their pols were caught in a pedophile scandal. Italy is a basket case. Poor them.
Gaddafi tells Palestinians: revolt against Israel
The Cretin of Tripoli has the unmitigated gall to call for Palestinians to revolt against Israel (who will crush them if they try) while Libya is beginning to feel the heat inside its own country.
Kremlin ‘bans critical ballerina from TV’
Interesting news from Russia. A dissident ballerina who came out against the jailing of billionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky has had her TV show cancelled. She claims to have been forced to have signed a letter supporting Khodorovsky’s first jail sentence, according to this article in Breitbart. Wouldn’t it be nice if Russia got rid of their home-grown tin-pots?
David Horowitz’s Keynote at CPAC 2011 -[video]
Former liberals make the best converts and best fighters for the conservative cause and David Horowitz is no exception.
“We saw David Horowitz, one of the great warriors of our movement. He talked about the national security menace posed by radical Islam and the obliviousness to that menace that pervades large sectors of the establishment, including some on the right. He got a thunderous reception from the CPAC crowd.” – Powerline Blog
A day of deadly knife violence in the US
Four people are dead and five injured after the most deadly weekend of US knife violence in recent memory.
- There is no background check required to buy a knife. Criminals and mentally disturbed persons are not prohibited from owning them.
New Yorker Maksim Gelman went on a stabbing spree Saturday in New York, killing four and injuring two more.
- There is no waiting period to buy a knife.
He had six knives with him during the day.
- There is no limit on the number of knives a person can buy or own in the US.
Gelman fatally stabbed his stepfather, his ex-girlfriend, and her mother.
- There is no license or training required to own a knife.
When arrested, Gelman had a 10-inch knife in his possession.
- There is no limit on the length of the knife that a person may own.
In another incident, William Pittel used a knife to stab three individuals in a Burger King restaurant in Sayreville, New Jersey on Saturday for no apparent reason.
- The only purpose of a knife is to kill people. These victims would still be alive or out of the hospital if sensible knife control measures were enacted. We need to get these knives off the street.
What happened in New York and New Jersey on Saturday was a tragedy, but it could have been perpetrated just as easily by a hammer or a length of rebar or bare fists…or a gun. Legislation will never prevent this type of attack. Responsible armed citizens can, though.
Ice Fishing The Winnipesaukee Derby, Placed In 2 Categories! (Pics&Video, updated and bumped)
Every year a bunch of the Beast’s old High School buddies gather to fish the Winni Ice Derby out of Meredith New Hampshire. Top prize for a tagged Rainbow Trout is a boat, but there are categories for Laker, Cusk and such too. There are daily prizes for tagged and untagged fish as well. This year we managed to place in two: 2nd for Lakers and 10th for untagged rainbow. A taste:
This was our home base – our host’s summer lakefront home. We basically fished in his front yard:
Saturday morning was brutally cold and overcast, we were up at first light setting up traps and tip-ups:

Got the heat going in the shanty:

Craig started setting up for breakfast:

The Beast’s son was not impressed with the ambient temps out there, note the reproachful glare:

While the hardier souls set out the traps:

Breakfast was fried sausage, bacon, eggs, potatoes and english muffins. By the time we got back we were ready for something hot in our stomachs. Coffee with Baileys hit the spot too.

Sunup took a bit of the edge off.

The girlfriends showed up after a bit. Women are not allowed to stay over, but they can visit during the day. Strict rule: NO WIVES!

We had a bonfire the night before and there were a few who opted to stay in the bunkhouse a bit longer than others.

Then we waited, eagle-eyed for the first flag (we got a bit pie-eyed after we broke into the Captain Morgans).

We even had a horseshoe pit on the ice, as well as a hockey rink.

And other distractions for the kids, including this novel idea: a shopping cart on skis.

And early Cusk

Late morning, our wait was rewarded! The next generation tied into a fine 3.4 pound untagged Rainbow! Here’s the video – warning, f-bomb alert!
This fish did get us on the boards, but only 10th place. But we were happy.

Lunch was handmade venison sausage and pepper subs.

Later afternoon we played liar’s poker and waited. Only perch from then on.

But we had fun anyway

Then it was back to our humble base-camp for a dinner of pasta with red sauce made from venison sausage and ground beef and black bear meat.

Sunday morning some people had to leave early. Those who stayed were rewarded, though. Craig set up a jigging spot and nailed a beautiful Laker.
That fish got him second place. We took off around three and the Beast had his first shower in two days. Thanks to our host and everybody who worked so hard to make this weekend so memorable! Tight lines, all!

Protester killed in Bahrain "Day of Rage": witnesses
The contagion spreads. A protester died today in Bahrain, despite the royal family trying to pay off protesters with a (by their standards) large amount of cash to quell another revolution. The so-called “Arab Street” smells blood everywhere. This will not end soon.
