Barack ain’t got nothin’ on Michelle

In an earlier post this week, I wrote about James Clyburn’s claim that opposition to Barack Obama is largely due to racism. Not to be outdone by her husband, we now learn that sadly, Michelle Obama is also a victim of the worst kind of bigotry.

Less than three years into the job, the first lady is on her third chief of staff, third social secretary, second communications director, the White House chief usher recently departed, and Mishy’s press secretary’s last day was Friday. Whew!

The Guinness Book of World Records level of staff turnover for first ladies is held by Michelle Obama for one reason: she’s being held to a higher level of scrutiny because she’s black.

At least that’s what Katherine Jellison, history professor at Ohio University says:

“She is, if possible, under more scrutiny than even other modern first ladies, being the first African-American first lady.”

Sources, who asked to remain anonymous, describe Mishy’s office as a pretty tough place to work; grueling hours, very high expectations, and intense demands. Said one source:

“The first lady is a lovely woman, but she’s tough as nails, and that can be hard for some people. She has really high expectations.”

Michelle Obama’s office declined comment – suggesting that all further questions be directed to the offices of James Clyburn, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson.
