Indiana College: No More Star Spangled Banner
’WAR-LIKE’ NATIONAL ANTHEM UNDERMINES ‘PACIFIST IMAGE’
A small Christian college in Goshen, Indiana with ties to the Mennonite Church will no longer play “The Star-Spangled Banner” at sporting events after receiving complaints that the song’s images of war and the military undermined the school’s pacifist message.
Goshen College’s board of directors told its president, Jim Brenneman, to find an alternative to the national anthem “that fits with sports tradition, honors country, and resonates with our core values and respects the views of diverse constituencies.”
The 1,000-student college has only been playing the national anthem for a year. In March of last year, it began playing an instrumental version – followed by a peace prayer – before games and other events. The school said at the time it would review the practice after a year.
Apparently, the votes are in – and patriotism lost.

America the Beautiful should do the trick.
Exactly what I was thinking – unless there is a subliminal, pro-war message in the lyrics, of course.
A religious school perhaps God Bless America. My Countrty Tis of Thee. Perhaps Bruce Sprinsteins song.
I’ve got the song. It is sporting event so ” America” from Berstein’s Westside Story.
Sad story. Beautiful picture though…
I thought so too Dave – on both accounts.
Seems like their business, to me.
Fine, just play a song that is peaceful AND patriotic.
It’s soap box sanctimoniousness at its best. The very soil these idiots are standing on was bought by blood & war. Over and over again. In the Bible, God Himself send troops into battle and BLESSED them so that they would win. God blessed David with his slingshot before he went up against Goliath. God intends the biggest battle of all to get rid of Satan someday. God and war don’t mix? Please. God, to me, doesn’t think about human life the way we do. Living doesn’t seem all that important. After Daniel was rescued from the lions’ den, the Bible says, rather casually, that all his accusers, their wives and children were thrown into the den and ripped apart! I think God cares more about whether or not we LOVE Him than how long we live on this earth. I can’t stand it when Christians do things like this. It makes the rest of us look bad.
Awesome. God’s perspective is different from ours and does matter more.
