My friend Chalcedon at All along the Watchtower has many friends in the Coptic Church and he posted earlier today on the troubles in Egypt. I doubt many of us are surprised that it is not as we have heard in our media. Here is part of what he says,
[...] I have just had from Coptic friends makes was ask if you will join me in prayers for all Christians in Egypt. Mari Giurgis Church has been gutted by Muslim Brotherhood supporters (picture); at least seven churches in Minya have been attacked; more than 14 churches in Cairo have been attacked, and no one has any idea of how many people have been killed.
There are reports of attacks on Copts in Suez, Fayoum, Minya, Sohag, Assiut & Beni-Suef. [...]
Update: Bishop Anba Suriel has just tweeted: ‘It is becoming clear that this is a planned and systemic attack by the MB against the Copts and their churches in Egypt. May God help us!’

That’s the news but why am I writing about this? Because in great measure it is the fault of the American Government.
The following is part of my post on Nebraska Energy Observer for tomorrow, (most of it, in fact)
America rose to lead the free world not, as many suppose, because of our economic prowess, gargantuan as it is. America rose to world leadership because, nearly alone amongst great powers, America has had a tendency to both mean well, and to attempt to do well, and to say what it means and to mean what it says.
If one were to survey the rulers of almost any country with which we’ve had contact, from the meanest to the greatest, in the last century, one would find them not overly fond of us, although it varies, those who value freedom have always had a higher regard for us than the others. But, and this is important, the people, and especially those who have met a fair number of our citizens, often soldiers, have far higher regard for us, because of the basic decency of the ordinary American.
In comments on the post Pray for the Copts, Chalcedon said in comments
Utterly shameful. Time was the world looked to America for moral leadership – and got it. Bring back Ike, there was nothing to forgive.
Chalcedon is a highly educated man, he knows the answer to that question, what he really wants to know is, Where is the America that looked the Soviet Union in the eye, and called it the Evil Empire. And went on to destroy it.
I echo the question, that America, the one that destroyed the Axis empires and then faced down the Soviets over a “long and bitter peace” that was my America, not this strip of dirt between the oceans whining for a handout. Frankly, I’m ashamed to be called an American anymore.
Remember this from John Winthrop
[...] for wee must Consider that wee shall be as a Citty upon a Hill, the eies of all people are uppon us; soe that if wee shall deale falsely with our god in this worke wee have undertaken and soe cause him to withdrawe his present help from us, wee shall be made a story and a byword through the world, wee shall open the mouthes of enemies to speake evill of the wayes of god and all professours for Gods sake; wee shall shame the faces of many of gods worthy servants, and cause theire prayers to be turned into Cursses upon us till wee be consumed out of the good land whether wee are going:
Yes that is the other side of the city on the hill. And it seems to men of good will all over the world that we have abandoned our beliefs.
In our churches we confess sins of omission and sins of commission, and while most are aware that both are sins, I think we can all agree that sins of omission while not less serious, are perhaps more understandable. Especially for a country, which does have problems at home that we should be concentrating on.
But, here is the meat of this post
The attack by the Muslim Brotherhood on the Coptic Church, is a direct result of our policy in Egypt where we fomented the overthrow of Mubarak in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is costing the lives of many of our brothers and sisters in Christ who are being martyred as we speak. And we knew, or should have known, this would happen, the Muslim Brotherhood goes back far enough in history to have been an explicit ally of Hitler‘s Nazi party, and still this is who our government chooses to associate itself with.
A sin of commission
ps. While researching this I found several references to documents in the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood which they say would be enough to to put Obama and others in prison. I know nothing more than that but, I (and you should too) will be paying attention to see if anything more develops along that line.
