Stinging quote of the day – best of the web WSJ edition
We’ve heard right-wingers express fear, and left-wingers voice hope, that President Obama will somehow get re-elected by exploiting civil unrest. For the life of us, we can’t imagine how that’s supposed to work. Imagine how much more selective Obama’s appeal would become with 9% unemployment and a breakdown of public order. — James Taranto, WSJ Best of the Web

Stinging quote of the day – family values
Historically, when the family begins to unravel in a given culture, everything from the effectiveness of government to the general welfare of the people is adversely impacted.
James C. Dobson – Bringing up Boys
Stinging quote of the day – on gun violence in schools.
Watch out. He’s back, and he’s reading another one of those right wing parenting books…
Many people blame school violence on the availability of guns, leading them to crusade passionately against firearms. There’s no doubt that adolescence and guns make a volatile cocktail, but that will not explain what is occurring today. Rabbi Daniel Lapin, president of Toward Tradition, said there was a time when boys in most American schools brought guns with them to their classrooms. They left them in the cloakrooms until the afternoon, when they retrieved them to go hunting. The firearms were not a problem. Now there is violence in almost every school, not because the guns have changed but because the boys have changed. And why have they changed? Because popular culture has taught them that violence is manly.

Censorship. It’s not about left or right, it’s about {THIS POST CENSORED FOR UNCIVIL VIEWS EXPRESSED ABOUT THE ONE}
With it being National Censorship Day here at the Constitution Club, I thought I would add a different perspective – a liberal’s perspective. Rise of the Obamabots – an article I received from a co-worker – details the effects of censorship on at least one liberal during this period of hope and change. It’s an interesting take, one that comes to a hilarious end as you read the author’s last sentence and then his bio – but regardless, it appears that no one is safe under this peaceful time of hope and change.

ICatching, IPopping, ITracking
This past week the tech world (and consumers in general) were shocked! Shocked to find tracking going on underneath the hood of the IPhone. And yet, locked into that 2 year contract, it became nothing more than a “really? Oh that’s not good.”
Wired magazine had an interesting take on the subject – writing about a shared concern that crossed my mind. Less Terminator, more Minority Report – but still a concern.

Stinging Quote of the Day – Wait a second… Say that again?
What’s going on here? Despite the ferocious opposition he has faced since the day he took office, Mr. Obama is clearly still clinging to his vision of himself as a figure who can transcend America’s partisan differences. And his political strategists seem to believe that he can win re-election by positioning himself as being conciliatory and reasonable, by always being willing to compromise.
But if you ask me, I’d say that the nation wants — and more important, the nation needs — a president who believes in something, and is willing to take a stand. And that’s not what we’re seeing.

It is a sad day for the English language – and not just any flavor mind you, but the Queen’s official English. OMG, LOL, BFF, and the verb “to heart” (displayed by the symbol of a heart, which has taken a symbol for itself much like the artist formerly known as Prince took a symbol a while back in his own unsuccessful bid for addition) have now been added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Too Close for Comfort
I still remember seeing Red Dawn for the first time. I remember thinking that the choices that were made were so foreign, yet so plausible, that it gave me serious pause and made me think “what would I do in that situation? How would I react?” My school mascot wasn’t the Wolverines, mind you, but it still sounded every bit as defiant if you yelled it the same way.

Stinging quote of the day
Those who govern, having much business on their hands, do not generally like to take the trouble of considering and carrying into execution new projects. The best public measures are therefore seldom adopted from previous wisdom, but forc’d by the occasion.

Invoking Hitler

In the past three years I have seen more comments comparing political statesmen to Adolf Hitler than I can count. For a split second I asked myself why, but then remembered an article I read almost 13 years ago that has stayed with me – and with the internet (on it’s original page, no less) to this day. The article was entitled “How to Argue Effectively” and can be found here .
What’s interesting to me is that invoking hitler is mentioned – but it is mentioned as the last resort, the big guns, the end all, be all finisher of arguments. And while the article itself may be satirical in nature, it is evident to me that the latest round of comparisons to Hitler is just that – a last ditch effort at winning an argument destined to fail.

Defiant Student quote of the day
Like Socrates, I am often accused of corrupting minds – in this case though it’s generally older minds, not younger – as I adjunct teach a computer class at a local university. Part of the final exam includes a “what I have learned” portion. It is by far my favorite part of the class for many reasons. Quotes like this are just one.
The last part of our class was about how to use Power Point. I have never used Power Point before but I think I will defiantly use it in the future.
Defiant use of power point is what I am all about people. Bring the defiance. Of course, if they were really defiant, they wouldn’t be using Power Point at all, but that’s another story.

If you haven’t read the headlines lately, but are the parents of young kids (especially daughters) you already know that Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” is out. Far be it for me to ruin this blog by even mentioning the Bieb, and I expect my name shall disappear from the masthead forthwith, but it sparked a conversation at the homestead about the fine line of responsibility parents have between being the friend or parent. Suffice it to say, the comment was made that “It’s tough, because I want to be the cool parent but feel like this is one of those areas where I need to be the concerned parent.” Of course my response was “that’s fine – you can be the cool one, but not me. I want to be the one that when the kid is out with my daughter he stops several times throughout the evening and thinks ‘dude, that guy is psycho’.” Read the rest of this entry
Stinging quote of the day, thanks Mr. Verne
While there is life, there is hope. I beg to assert, Henry, that as long as a man’s heart beats, as long as a man’s flesh quivers, I do not allow that a being gifted with thought and will can allow himself to despair.

Stinging Quote of the Day
..Another thing demonstrated will be the propriety of everyman’s waiting for his time for appearing upon the stage of the world. Our sensations being very much fixed to the moment, we are apt to forget that more moments are to follow the first, and consequently that man should arrange his conduct so as to suit the whole of life.

Stinging quote of the day
When we are planning for posterity, we ought to remember, that virtue is not hereditary.

–Thomas Paine, Common Sense
Stinging quote of the day
If you wish information and improvement from the knowledge of others, and yet at the same time express yourself as firmly fix’d in your present opinions, modest, sensible men, who do not love disputation, will probably leave you undisturbed in the possession of your error.

Can we slow things down a bit?
Chalk this one up as original – if you haven’t heard this yet you should take a listen. Someone took the theme to Jurassic Park and slowed it down (stretched it out) by 1000%. The results are stunning – reminds me of the good days of the “Hearts of Space” series – when there were good days and my dad used to sit in the music room and listen to the broadcast for hours on his stereophonic whatever it was called… Well worth at least a few minutes of listening to the first minute of the score.

Quote of the (Present) Day
At some point – and I say this to you with all the passion I possibly can – the West has got to get out of what I think is this wretched policy, or posture, of apology for believing that we are causing what the Iranians are doing, or what these extremists are doing. The fact is we are not.The fact is they are doing it because they disagree fundamentally with our way of life and they will carry on doing it unless they are met with the requisite determination and, if necessary, force.

We built (then bankrupted) this city
Just a few miles north of Mobile, Alabama is the tiny city of Prichard. Nestled near the sprawling metropolis (heavy sarcasm) cities of “Eight Mile”, “Saraland” and “Citronelle”, it is about to be thrust into the spotlight as a city to watch – not for it’s growth, not for it’s outstanding leadership, but for what happens after a city declares bankruptcy to avoid its creditors (in this case, it’s retirees). In September of 2009 it quit paying pension benefits to its retirees because the proverbial well had run dry. A federal judge ixnayed the bankruptcy, so get the popcorn ready. Safe to say the “too big to fail” argument is not one that I have heard proposed as of yet, but other cities may be interested to see what happens.
Stinging quote of the day
Though I would carefully avoid giving unnecessary offence, yet I am inclined to believe, that all those who espouse the doctrine of reconciliation, may be included within the following descriptions. Interested men, who are not to be trusted; weak men, who CANNOT see; and certain set of moderate men, who think better of the European world than it deserves; and this last class, by an ill-judged deliberation, will be the cause of more calamities to this continent, than all the other three.

Quote of the Moment…
And little as I had a right to be remembered by Him whom I had forgotten in the hour of my prosperity, and whom I so tardily invoked, I prayed earnestly and sincerely. This renewal of my youthful faith brought about a much greater amount of calm, and I was enabled to concentrate all my strength and intelligence on the terrible realities of my unprecedented situation.

Jack Ryan for President
If only this were a real stump speech…
Ladies and Gentlemen, it is not the job of the government to be the national nanny. The average citizen can look after his or her own needs without assistance from somebody who works here in Washington. America was founded because our citizens two-hundred-plus years ago didn’t want to live under the distant rule of people who didn’t know and didn’t especially care for their welfare. America is about freedom. Freedom to make your own decisions, freedom to live in peace with your neighbors. Freedom to take your kids to Disney World in Florida, or a trout stream in Colorado. Freedom means deciding what you want to do with your life. Freedom is the natural state of nature. That’s how God wanted us to live. The job of the President of the United States is to preserve, protect and defend our country. When the President does that job, the citizens can live any way they wish. That is the objective of the President: to protect the people and then to leave them alone.
Jack Ryan, channeling Tom Clancy, in Tom Clancy’s Dead or Alive
Quote of the day
For Christmas I used some of those great gift cards to buy a Kindle – which I had no interest in at all until I saw one and saw the screen technology. Impressive to say the least… Over the holiday I managed to actually read 2 books. It was fantastic. One a classic (A Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne) and one another modern day prophecy (Dead or Alive by Tom Clancy).
One cool feature about the Kindle is that you can highlight and make clippings of quotes that you want to remember… and so it is with the quote of the day, heard before in different contexts, and still so appropriate today.
But you perceive, my boy, that it is not so, and that facts, as usual, are very stubborn things, overruling all theories.

Over-protectionism, or… You really do need a passport to come down here.
Welcome to the deep south. That’s right. Where the hospitality flows and nothing is ever negative, it’s just ‘special’, or ‘lovely’. (“What do you think of this?” … “Oh, isn’t that lovely, dear.”)
Being the parent of three extremely extroverted kids, I often find myself struggling with the idea of being over-protective. Yes, that’s right, I’m the one who won’t let the kids go out and play in the street unsupervised even though my parents did it. I’m the one who makes sure that they are strapped into the all but bulletproof car seats in the safest cars with the bulletproof glass and tinted windows. I’m the one who won’t let the kids get into the back of the truck to ride down to the pond even though I recall falling out of the truck several times as a kid. (“Mom, I fell out of granddad’s truck on the way to the pond. It hurt.” “Oh, isn’t that lovely, dear?”)
Most days I endure the comments. “Oh, I understand why you won’t let your kids come over to spend the night. It’s fine, no really.. it’s lovely.”
Then there are days where I come to work and my colleague says “hey did you hear about..”, and suddenly I am justified. Yes, welcome to the deep south, where rolling just isn’t how they roll anymore.

In the Absence of Leadership…
Day 2 of the long awaited vacation found me once again hitting the beach, concerned about what I would find. The beaches of South Walton – 15 or so of them – stretch along 30-A, about as far south as you can get along the lower curve east of the panhandle of Florida. So far I think I have seen one tar ball, which I removed from the water. I really couldn’t tell because it was wrapped in green algae and try as I would have to get a better look at it, that algae is nasty… But the most impressive thing I have seen on my vacation so far is the community spirit I have found here – and the willingness of the community to step up when no one else will.

Ok, so BP hasn’t ruined my vacation plans… yet.
Living on the southern end of the continent makes life interesting this time of year in general, usually for hurricanes and the occasional accusation of my occupation as a spy for the Union Army – a charge which I still vehemently deny but am beginning to worry about, as the Manchurian Candidate keeps showing up in my Netflix queue unexpectedly. Verizon iPhone Release Date Announced – You heard it here first.
Yes, that’s right gang. I now know and can share with you the release date for the new iPhone on Verizon. That date is exactly 30 days from the date of delivery of my new HTC Droid Incredible, which I ordered yesterday – scheduled to ship around June 30. So if Murphy’s law rings true, look for the new iPhone running on Verizon to be announced around August 31, 2010 or so…
How I got my swagger back
After an extended absence from both the posts and the comments, this may be lightweight compared to some of the recent brilliance on display by the Beast and his fans. I also acknowledge that by posting an ad for a car company (especially this car company), I fall into the category of those less concerned about dependence upon oil. To make matters worse, thanks to BP a huge friggin Oil Slick is expected to be on my back door in a few days and potentially ruin my vacation plans for the summer. But that’s okay. Because I fall square into the freaking middle of the demographic this particular ad is oh-so-brilliantly aimed at. It may be the end of the world as I know it, but I feel fine.
John the Revelator, take one
Posted with only one comment: “Thought provoking.”
Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.
The more things change. . .
I have always heard that history repeats itself because no one listened the first time around, and today I have found additional evidence to support that claim. Scroll through some of the Time magazine covers, specifically from 1976-1980 and take a look at the headlines, the people, the concerns of the day. From socialism to the war on terror – it’s all there in vivid color. I recommend starting here and moving forward for a really interesting look at, well… Time.
How would YOU spend taxpayer dollars?
THIS just takes the cake.
No WONDER the president is so popular. And here I was under the impression it was politics as usual. Obviously it is NOT politics as usual!
Republicans have stooped to a new low – pointing out questionable spending habits ‘hidden’ in the stimulus package. It’s no wonder that the Democratic party can’t get anything done. With all the partisan politics going on, it’s obvious that the house and senate are totally deadlocked (as apparently no side holds the majority of seats in either location) and there can be no hope or change in our future.
But fear not. For the list of items included in the stimulus package contains enough goodies to keep the party going all night long. One thing’s for sure. Syracuse’s enrollment ought to be pretty high in the male demographic this next year.
More Climate Change Evidence Uncovered
Say it isn’t so. It looks as though there is some more evidence pointing towards climate change – or more specifically, how it has affected the economy in the U.K. Maybe there is something to it/in it for me after all. I have been so blinded by the evidence that I have completely ignored the financial opportunities that abound.
Teapartican Militant Group Responsible for Scott Brown Victory.
I often enjoy a good conspiracy theory. I even enjoyed the horrible Mel Gibson/Patrick Stewart movie of the same name. Something about the phrase “Pass the gravy, Jerry” just resonated with me.
Perhaps the thing I enjoy most about each new one that I read about is how exponentially outlandish they become – and how cool it would be (usually) if they were true; however the horrific suggestion that is the latest conspiracy theory (introduced by none other than Hugo Chavez) is that US weapons testing is behind the earthquake on Haiti. Apparently Haiti was a test subject for our contingency plan for Iran.
While the notion he puts forward is really sick, think of the strategic political potential behind this theory. Read the rest of this entry

The kind of “change” we need
Dave’s recent War and Peace part II novel about militant Islam and the way we approach it today brought this clip to mind. If you want to see how a war is won, watch this mini-series (Band of Brothers), one of the best I have ever seen IMHO.
I can’t say enough about this segment though. Just when things are worst, a change is made. A two second politically incorrect decision and order (at 6:04) changes everything – and the effects it has on those following are obvious by the end of the clip. Watching the leadership ‘trickle down effect’ is inspiring, and makes me ‘hope’ for a leadership ‘change’.
How does she do it?
This is the face of health care. (Caution. Graphic image after the jump. Be careful, you have been warned.)
Your winnings, sir.
During the Bush administration, the Obama campaign, and the lead up to the election, it seemed like every John Mayer wannabe and artist of any (or no) influence at all would get an idea in their head, sit down and write a song about change, wanting the world to do so, and honesty. We were tired of Bush and his ‘lies’, tired of such an unjust and misguided war, tired of hearing about cleaning up Washington and ready for to drain the swamp. Ready for some ACTION. And now, after all this time, we are finally seeing the results of that action. This joyous occasion surely calls for a reward. If only there were one that truly fit the bill.
Anti Global Warming Activism – We are Building a Religion
In the early days of the 90′s I recall hearing one of those college touring indie groups. This one stuck with me a.) because they were from Australia, b.) because they had some of the funniest songs I had ever heard and c.) I was changed by their lyrics forever. Now thanks to the wonders of the internet, I have found them – and the song that has stuck in my head to this very day. Needless to say, these guys were WAY ahead of their time. For your consideration, and for your enlightenment I present the Scared Weird Little Guys. Please excuse the quality of the audio/video. Years of play on You-Tube and the 1,032 views must have eroded the quality of the media somewhat. Remember, YOU can make a difference.
