Sometimes a simple question can become complicated. Perhaps the question should be, “Have we adjusted to the cultural change to the point that we are ready for a different form of government to control our new culture?” The culture sixty years ago was quite different from what is observed today. Why did it change so much [...]

Politicians and Government Have A Conflict of Interests That Is Wrecking America

The U.S. government’s number one priority is–obviously–returning to manageable finances before it reaches economic collapse, threatening everything that has been built in this country. No other single government goal can compete with that; all else must take a lower place until the clear and present danger passes. Setting any different priority is not only irresponsible, [...]

Senator Durbin (D) added price control to the Dodd-Frank bill to conrol the banks; his amendment caps what banks can charge merchants for credit card use; Debit Durbin explains. 1. Politicians can save the economy… False. Politicians can and repeatedly do trash it but only private enterprise can provide the wealth generation needed to to save a sick economy and to keep one healthy. All the imperiled European governments and the U.S. are in trouble because all their political leaders put their own benefit over the good of their countries. Fate Worse than Debt?
The debate seemed to be: Raise the Debt Ceiling or Don’t Raise the Debt Ceiling?
Really? How about: This Whole Thing Could have Been Easily Avoided If We Stopped Buying DEBT! Pay it down. Zero Debt NOW. Mandate: All pork barrel spending automatically goes toward the debt until its Gone.
Step One: Last Years Revenues? THAT’s your baseline budget. No more legislating dollar amount spending:The NEW deal is a percentage of Last Years Revenue. Shave off -I dunno- 20%? off the top for the debt. The other 80% is what congress has to work with. The amount is decided, only how big of a slice goes where is left to decide. End of story, Morning Glory.

Allen West’s keynote speech for CPAC 2011
Representative Allen West (R-Florida) gave the closing speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on February 12, 2011. Here’s what he had to say.
He introduced an Army Sergeant, a veteran of Iraq, who trains those who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
He talked about the difficult campaigns where Republicans won the House majority while having to contend with unreasonable accusations.
He pointed out that he had been called “The Worst Person in the World” 5 or 6 times (presumably by Keith Olbermann), and then with a little smile he said “And he got fired for it!”
He said “I believe that we are standing on the verge of the dawn of a new America, if we adhere to those fundamental Conservative principles, and those Consitutional ideals.”He quoted Alexis de Toqueville: “While democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.”
The next part of his speech involved what he called the “pillars of conservatism.”
First pillar: Effective and efficient conservative government.
- He quoted Thomas Jefferson: “Most bad government results from too much government”), which is why next week Congress will cut 100 billion dollars of spending off of the federal budget.
- Making people more dependent on the government has to end, so hard decisions must be made. “We cannot continue on with the policies of behavior modification through excessive taxation and over burdensome regulation…and that’s why we’re going to be cutting from the EPA.” (wild cheering)
- If health care is so great, then someone explain to me why over 200 Democrat political groups are going to the President and asking for waivers.” Here was a great quote: “I say this to the President: The good things in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: closing the doughnut hole, making sure that we take care of people with the preexisting conditions, keeping our young kids on our insurance, I can probably fit that in five to ten pages. It’s the other two thousand four hundred ninety pages with eleven new taxes, a hundred fifty nine new government agencies and beauracracies, and sixteen thousand new IRS agents, that the United States of America does not want!” (standing ovation)
- He mentioned the financial meltdown in 2008 and blamed it (rightfully so) on government interference with the private sector.
- He talked about reforming the individual tax code, cutting the corporate business tax rate from 35% down to 20%, eliminating capital gains taxes and dividends taxes, capping federal spending at 18-20%, developing a balanced budget amendment, and eliminating “redundant, failed, and duplicitious federal government programs and agencies.”
Second pillar: Peace through vigilance, through resolve, through strength.
- He mentioned the famous Edmund Burke quote, one of my personal favorites: “All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”
- He quoted Sun Tzu: “To know your enemy, and to know yourself, and to know the terrain or the environment, in countless battles, you will always be victorious.”
- And then he made the most important statement of the night: “Peace begins with courageous leaders who are willing to identify and define our enemy, and their objectives, because political correctness has no place in our national security strategy.” (the crowd screamed and another standing ovation ensued)
- He said he was appalled that the Fort Hood shooting was treated like workplace violence.
- He said “A new America, a secure America, means that we can ill afford to have a twenty-first century Sir Neville Chamberlain moment.”
- He said “And yes, yes I do have a problem with granting American Constitutional rights to terrorists while we attempt to and have imprisoned our own warriors for killing terrorists.” (another standing ovation – there were so many during this speech)
- Here’s another money quote: “The dawn of a new America means this: Secure our borders and enforce our laws. Recognize the emerging threats on the Korean peninsula. Recognize the threats that are coming out of South and Central America. And confront the radical Islamic non-state, non-uniformed belligerents who transit freely across borders, killing and promoting a seventh century ideology that is anathema to the values of America and to Western civilization.”
- He said that we must never forget that Israel is our greatest ally in the Middle East, and vowed that “I shall never let Israel down.”
Third and most important pillar: Never abandon our values.
- “We must honor our language and realize that it is the most important, most basic and common bond which makes us an American.”
- He said we shouldn’t allow multiculturalism to “grow on steroids” and make American culture subservient.
- He said he doesn’t support late term abortion or abortion as birth control because he doesn’t believe that having a baby is punishment (reference to an Obamateurism).
- He said “We must hold sacred the privilege of the institution of marriage as a bond between a man and a woman.”
- He said we had to reclaim our “Judeo-Christian faith heritage.” He quoted John Adams: “We have no government armed with power, capable of contending with human passions, unbridled by morality and religion. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
- He said “This is not about a separation of church and state. It is about making sure that we do not separate faith from the individual. You must never forget that the American motto is In God We Trust.” (standing ovation)
- His next statement almost got a standing ovation from me: “We welcome the beliefs of others in America, but our coexistence must be based on a simple premise: when tolerance becomes a one-way street, it leads to cultural suicide. And American cultural values shall never be subjugated to any other as long as I have air in my lungs.”
His closing thoughts started with a quote from George Washington: “We are either a united people or we are not. If the former, let us in all matters of general concern act as a nation which has national objects to promote and a national character to support. If we are not, let us no longer act a farce by pretending to it.” He quoted Abraham Lincoln: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” He discussed how he grew up in the Atlanta area and went into the military, and then ran for political office as a public service to all Americans. He said “This is what Abraham Lincoln said. ‘Be sure you put your feet in the right place. Then stand firm.’ So as you depart here today from this great hall, from this great gathering of conservatives, this is the commission that I send you out with: Stand firm, for this is the dawn of a new America. God bless you all, God bless America, steadfast and loyal. Thank you.”
The speech can be seen in its entirety at The Rightscoop.
NOTE: The video of this speech recorded from C-SPAN was cut off near the end so they could cover a speech by the President. Most of the YouTube videos I saw all came from C-SPAN.
The Reality of Congress
Let’s put the spending issue into perspective. Say I am a conservative, thinking good fiscal sense is the right path. My congressman (woman) may well be of like mind. Let’s say I support a high-speed rail system running through my city. Sure, data shows it would improve the economy and, perhaps environmental concerns, in my area. Yet, my congressperson says to me, “hey, it’s a great idea, but we simply cannot afford it at this time; let’s leave it on the table for another time”…
In the meantime, other, Democrat-controlled regions put forth similar plans, regardless of finances…
At the end of the day, the fiscally-irresponsible areas HAVE the expensive programs, at the increased expense of neighboring taxpayers, and the responsible parties (those who chose to wait) suffer because their time may never come, simply because they must now pay for the “greed” of neighboring districts and their default…
So, with this in mind… let me ask you this… Why should anyone ever wait? Republicans and Democrats are simply in a race to get whatever they can WHEN they can!
As long as ANY party chooses to spend more than they have, NO party can possibly act responsibly and hope to serve its constituents honorably, can it?
Dave’s Quote of the Day
“They don’t like the truth so they summarily dismiss it. They say it’s a government takeover of healthcare. A big lie just like [Nazi propaganda minister Joseph] Goebbels. You say it enough and you repeat the lie, repeat the lie, repeat the lie until eventually people believe it. Like blood libel, that’s the same kind of thing. The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it, and you have the Holocaust. You tell a lie over and over again.”
-Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen (Tenn.) on the House floor Tuesday night comparing Republican claims about the healthcare reform law to lies perpetrated by the Nazis that led to the Holocaust.
So much for that whole “lets all be civil, tone down the rhetoric” crap the Left has been peddling lately. What a bunch of lame, ridiculous, whining hypocrites.
If he feels this strongly about lies, he’s just got to feel horrendously awful about how his ideological allies have been treating Sarah Palin over the last week and a half. I eagerly await his indignant speech on the House floor in regards to the libel, slander, and yes lies directed at her in such a hateful manner.
Dave’s Quote of the Day
If the new Congress to be sworn in on Wednesday is the Tea Party’s cardinal achievement so far, its most symbolic achievement will unfold the next day, when the first order of business in the House will be a reading, aloud, of the Constitution – by all accounts, for the first time in the nation’s history. I discuss this issue more fully in this morning’s Wall Street Journal. Let me add simply this:
Symbols are important. When the House votes next week to rescind ObamaCare, as it is expected to do, that vote will be symbolic, because no one expects the Senate to uphold the vote, nor the president, if it did, to do anything but veto it. But the new House, responding to the voters who sent them to Washington, will have thrown down the gauntlet, and the real work will then begin.
Restoring limited constitutional government is a tall order, to be sure, and it cannot happen in a day. But we didn’t get into this mess in a day, either. As we saw a generation ago in Eastern Europe, and are now starting to see in Western Europe, the road out of the ubiquitous state is difficult, with fits and starts along the way. But the alternative is simply unacceptable, because unconstitutional. We’re fortunate that we’re not in as deeply as many others, and fortunate too that we have a Constitution to serve as our touchstone. Wednesday, with the oath “to support and defend the Constitution,” will be a start. Thursday’s reading will dramatically set the stage for the debate that follows. The hard work then begins.
In Honor of the 112th Congress
I give you Captain Kirk quoting the preamble of the US Constitution. Still some good ideas in there. And hopefully this new congress will finally be the ones who start to respect both the spirit and word of this most important of documents.
The true definition of bi-partisanship
This song speaks to me on so many political levels that it isn’t funny. What’s better is that he made a video which depicts exactly what I think bi-partisanship probably looks like. As to which side is which, I’ll let you be the judge.

The last gasp of the progressives
Millions of homes being lost to foreclosure. The federal government having to borrow 40 cents of ever dollar it spends. An exploding federal debt. About a quarter of the population unemployed or underemployed. A failed public school system. Corrupt unions and an administration openly bribing elected officials with funds from the public treasury or paid positions in return for their votes. Massive illegal immigration. Forty-two million people on food stamps. Big government bailing out big business while the average citizen received no benefit. “To big to fail.” One in five Americans has an STD and popular culture is a sewer. Thus is the state of the United States today.

Let’s Take Notes, Shall We?
This clip is a Marine ripping into a Congressman. As I watch the crowd, as I hear the Marine’s voice and passion, and as my heart breaks with worry, yet beems with pride…I realize as I view more and more people who speak out that we are not alone. http://www.libertyjuice.com/2010/08/27/marine-rips-into-congressman/
As for another voice…I know some don’t care for Glenn Beck. I ask, though, for everyone to dvr or watch him all this week. The facts, not just from what he says, but what can be researched, is eye opening and quite frankly, frightening unless we do something about what shall come. Economists state that food inflation shall sky rocket come 2011. I’m not sure how we can all form a liveable budget if milk is nearly $25 a gallon or some God forsaken thing.
I don’t want to speak for Beck’s research, for no matter what is said, there are those that think Glenn Beck is a lunatic simply attempting to promote his books and place fear within the “misguided”. Research what is being said, to those skeptics out there, and to Beck’s trusting listeners. He’s asked for every one of his viewers to reach out to the circles of friends, family, and even our strangers to watch what his team has investigated for this week.
I’m doing my part, if only a small role, to help wise us up and save our country. I’ve never been one for conspiracy theories or wanting to believe that our precious, priviledged American way of life is on a last leg.
People…please. This progressive movement, of which I have been a sleeping giant to, is going to kill our finances, our securities, our way of life, and our entire American culture as we know it. The Republicans in the house majority have a lot of work to do. Real work, real actions, real plans! Republicans…don’t give us any lip service, or you will be blamed for all of the failures to come…that’s how the picture will be formed.
Hats off to this Marine. Hats off to people like Glenn Beck shouting a voice to be listened to. Whether you view for entertainment or information, for God’s sakes, watch his show this week and let’s at least take some notes to learn from.
Passing on the most basic responsibility of governing
Steny Hoyer has decided Congress doesn’t need to pass a budget this year. It’s just too darned complicated to pass a budget when there’s all that darned debt. Rather than being faced with the possibility of increasing the debt even more, or making painful budget cuts during an election year, Hoyer is punting until later when there’s not an election to worry about.
I thought this comment was amazingly appropriate:
House Democrats are now on the cusp of failing to meet the most basic responsibility of governing – enacting a budget. The truth is, the American people are not the only ones who are rejecting the Democrats Party’s policies – so are some Democrats. After years of helping their party and president dig a massive fiscal hole, some Democrats are now running scared that their misguided policies will finally catch up to them at the ballot box this November.
Those words were spoken by Steny Hoyer in 2006. I changed one word. Wanna guess which one?

I have always heard that history repeats itself because no one listened the first time around, and today I have found additional evidence to support that claim. Scroll through some of the Time magazine covers, specifically from 1976-1980 and take a look at the headlines, the people, the concerns of the day. From socialism to the war on terror – it’s all there in vivid color. I recommend starting here and moving forward for a really interesting look at, well… Time.
The Era of Transparency part deux
The first Era of Transparency post was penned by the Scribe last July. In it, Damien documented the fact that the Obama administration isn’t really giving us two choices regarding Cap and Trade and health care. He is pulling out the best of alternative scenarios and saying that Americans can have it all!

Your winnings, sir.
During the Bush administration, the Obama campaign, and the lead up to the election, it seemed like every John Mayer wannabe and artist of any (or no) influence at all would get an idea in their head, sit down and write a song about change, wanting the world to do so, and honesty. We were tired of Bush and his ‘lies’, tired of such an unjust and misguided war, tired of hearing about cleaning up Washington and ready for to drain the swamp. Ready for some ACTION. And now, after all this time, we are finally seeing the results of that action. This joyous occasion surely calls for a reward. If only there were one that truly fit the bill.
Is Charles Schumer giving us an example of “talking out of both sides of your mouth”?
Democrats May Bypass Republicans on Health Plan, Schumer Says
Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) — Senate Democrats may decide to pass a U.S. health-care overhaul without Republican support if some opposition lawmakers don’t agree to a plan by mid-September, Senator Charles Schumer said.
Schumer, a New York Democrat, said Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus set a Sept. 15 deadline for getting a bipartisan agreement among six senators on the panel who are negotiating a deal.
“If we cannot produce a bipartisan solution by then, you have to wonder if the Republicans would ever be willing to agree to anything,” Schumer said on a conference call with reporters yesterday. “We will enact health-care reform by the end of the year. If the Republicans are not able to produce an agreement, we will have contingencies in play.” Read the rest of this entry
Even in Dana Pico’s own “City of the Lost” – Philadelphia, they understand Obama’s vision on health care all too well.
Audience Shouts Down Sebelius, Specter at Health Care Town Hall in Philadelphia
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Sen. Arlen Specter got a preview Sunday of the tough sell lawmakers will face over health care reforms.
Among those at odds with the officials touting the $1 trillion, 10-year plan was a woman who earned loud applause when she said she doesn’t want Washington interfering with her health care choices.
“I look at this health care plan and I see nothing that is about health or about care. What I see is a bureaucratic nightmare, senator. Medicaid is broke, Medicare is broke, Social Security is broke and you want us to believe that a government that can’t even run a cash for clunkers program is going to run one-seventh of our U.S. economy? No sir, no,” she said.
This lady’s comments remind me of the saying – “Socialized Medicine – Delivered with the efficiency of the Motor Vehicle Department, with the compassion of the IRS.”
I believe in effective and efficient universal coverage. I do not like the costly patchwork that we have now. I believe in portability. Our established policy of tying health coverage to a job is just simply wrong. I believe that exclusions and denials based on “uninsurabilty” should be abolished. Group rates based on the law of large numbers can effectively control the cost of insurance to individuals (premiums), and the exposure that insurance companies have through equal distribution of risk. Out of pocket expenses can be reduced by choice through elective coverage as is the case now with many group and individual policies.
We will need the government to force insure the percentage of the population that can afford coverage but does not carry it. Let the Populist-Libertarian-Luddites (PLL’s) complain all they want, but we already pay the uninsured’s health costs as a society. Those that can pay should regardless of how likely their potential loss is.
Health care is a form of welfare for part of society already. The government should on a needs basis pay the premiums in a private plan that is distributed equally among providers for those unable to pay for it themselves. Before my PLL friends complain about “them people will be taking my money and stuff”, keep in mind that they already do. This coverage should extend to legal and illegal alike. We again already pay for this. This would be a formal acknowledgement – yes - but also more efficient.
Abolish Medicare and Medicaid. They do not work well. They can not be tweaked to be more efficient. Get the government out of the health provider business and make the insurance industry pull the load they were designed to pull. There is nothing scarce about health care at all. It is not a “precious resource”. It is a commodity that we have plenty of. If we remove government interference in the market AND institute simple but effective insurance reforms we can control costs. The curve can be bent. Just not by the government.
The “Government Option” and the Single Payer system with its resultant socialized medicine is neither needed nor preferred. Sometimes ‘da peop’le get it right.
ADD: An excellent article on Medicaid in City Journal today. Make sure to read “The Making New York’s Private Health Insurance More Affordable” blurb at the end. There is plenty of money in the system, multiples of the funds required in fact. The key is to get rid of the hybrid system.
Political Calculations: Meet “The Rich”
Political Calculations: Meet “The Rich”.
President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party majority in the U.S. Congress are committed to allowing the federal income tax relief first passed in 2001 to expire after 2010, which will result in nearly everyone’s tax rates in the U.S. rising when they do. Our question today: Which taxpayers are going to get shafted the most when that happens?
Those that earn between $30,650 and 154.800 are going to be providing the lions share of the new revenue generated by this reset in tax codes. Remember though, this “expiration” will not count as a tax increase.
Dude she played the Reagan card!
There is no plausible scenario under which Republicans can grow into a majority while shrinking our ideological confines and continuing to retract into a regional party. Ideological purity is not the ticket back to the promised land of governing majorities — indeed, it was when we began to emphasize social issues to the detriment of some of our basic tenets as a party that we encountered an electoral backlash.
It is for this reason that we should heed the words of President Ronald Reagan, who urged, “We should emphasize the things that unite us and make these the only ‘litmus test’ of what constitutes a Republican: our belief in restraining government spending, pro-growth policies, tax reduction, sound national defense, and maximum individual liberty.” He continued, “As to the other issues that draw on the deep springs of morality and emotion, let us decide that we can disagree among ourselves as Republicans and tolerate the disagreement.”
Senator Olympia Snowe, Republican, Maine
She and Ronald are right.
Newt to Waxman: The Government should not be punishing the American People
YouTube – Newt Battles Rep Waxman (D) On Global Warming.
Senator Waxman: ”Mr. Gingrich, I am sure glad you’re not in charge of foreign policy. Do you think the only way to incentivize the country is by offering them more and more carrots. You have got to have some threat and sometimes you have to say incentivize you, we are going to give you some assistance, but there are going to be consequences.”
Mr. Gingrich: ” Mr. Chairman, I don’t think of American citizens the way I think of foreign dictators. And I don’t think this Congress should punish the American people. I think this Congress has every right to reward the American people, but I don’t think Lincoln’s government of the people, by the people, for the people should be turned into a government punishing the people..”
What a farce this whole Waxman-Markey Global Warming Bill/Earth Day party testimony turned out to be. It seems as if the old “If you’re not with us you are against us” policy is being recycled by the liberal democrats for use on “climate change” policy. But getting the bill through the House in it’s current form will never happen. Dems are already hedging their bets.
The Ice Sheet is Breaking…The Sky is Falling…The Roof is on Fire

News that the Wilkins Ice Sheet in Antarctica was shattering bounced around the news and the blogosphere during the past few weeks. This earth ice shattering announcement led U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to pronounce
With the collapse of an ice bridge that holds in place the Wilkins Ice Shelf we are reminded that global warming has already had enormous affects on our planet and we have no time to lose in tackling this crisis
Expect the MSM to continue to bang this drum during the build up to the Climate Conference in Copenhagen scheduled for December. The EPA announcement today brings us one step closer to climate change legislation. You can count on some new regulations being slammed through Congress before December to “prove” to the world that we have seen the light (and plan to turn it off!)
But take another look at that Wilkins news. It seems as if the shocking photo posted by The Guardian is the exact same photo used in an article by MSNBC
almost one year earlier.
One might think so what, even if the photos are the same, they still show the ice shelf breaking away. True, but maybe the cause is not the warming of air…
In the media reports shown at the start of this document, the recycled picture shows shear failure of the ice slabs indicating that it is not caused by melting due to warming in the air – the weakness of the ice shelf structure is from thinning ice due to warmer local sea temperatures below.
This is an annual event caused by the warmer sea water flow in this part of the Antarctic peninsula. Check out the Wilkins link and draw your own conclusions. Who is running the con game??
On Congressional hypocrisy
I’ve always enjoyed reading many of the Conclubbers here but I especially enjoy the nuanced and dynamic views of PG, DFV and Jeff. They are generally tolerant people that are intolerant of political corruption on both sides of the aisle. I don’t always agree with them, but at least they are not so firmly entrenched in their ideology that they refuse to see the corruption in the guys that they vote for. Contrast that with Wes or Phoenecian. Their guys can generally do no wrong and are bastions of light in a dark and cloudy world.
I’m reminded of this because I believe that for the Republicans to rise again, they must be willing to completely clean house and return to their core ideology of lower taxes and less spending. They must also stand firm against the overwhelming tide of special interest, earmarks, kickbacks, double standards and big government. And it’s clear that the current crop is just not up to the task:
The U.S. Senate last month passed a measure limiting “luxury” spending for corporate travel by recipients of federal bailout funds. Two weeks later, about two dozen senators of both parties left town for political meetings on the Florida coast.
Hotel-industry leaders are seizing on those trips as ammunition in a campaign to get lawmakers and Obama administration to tone down the rhetoric against business travel, which they say is adding to their economic difficulties.
“It’s just the hypocrisy,” said Frank Fahrenkopf, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee who is president of the Washington-based American Gaming Association, one of the groups urging politicians to moderate the criticism. “We’ve got to have Washington stop beating up on us.”
If both Republicans and Democrats want to enact their agenda through a legitimate process that involves debate, brokering and the formation of coalitions, then have at it. If the Dems want to raise taxes, raise spending, and create more reliance of government, then so be it. I don’t like it, but that is the spoils of victory for them. But for Congressmen to engage in public relations campaigns intent on destroying the images and structures of corporations that largely followed policies put in place by Congress, that is a problem. For representatives from both sides of the aisle to rail against corruption while engaging in those same behaviors rubs me wrong.
And at this point, there are only a few people willing to criticize members of their chosen ideology for such hypocrisy.
The ugly double standard continues
I’ve said before that I really despise the corruption and lack of ethics generally displayed by both parties (particularly in Congress). The most recent example is the omnibus spending bill which was laden with billions of dollars in pork (&7.7 billion to be exact). Republicans accounted for about 45% of that pork thereby taking away any ability to say that they are the party against wasteful spending. The joke in Washington is that there are actually three parties in Washington; Democrats, Republicans, and Appropriators.
Ethical spending dilemmas aside, what I really detest is the policy-makers and spin doctors that say one thing while doing something entirely different. And while Republicans are not immune to the double standard, it is the left that seems to consistently tread in the murky swamps of duplicity. Here are a few of my favorites. Add more if you feel so compelled:
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, just minutes before learning of the terrorist attacks on America, Democratic strategist James Carville was hoping for President Bush to fail, telling a group of Washington reporters: “I certainly hope he doesn’t succeed.”
“The most influential Republican in the United States today, Mr. Rush Limbaugh, said he did not want President Obama to succeed,” Carville railed on CNN recently. “He is the daddy of this Republican Congress.”
In 2006, 51 percent of Democrats wanted Bush to fail, according to a FOX News/Opinion Dynamics poll
“Earmarks is the responsibility of the Congress. We should earmark even more. We should earmark every penny. So, that’s the principle that we have to follow and the — and the responsibility of the Congress.” Ron Paul, March 10, 2009 whose earmarks totalled $79 million.
When John McCain’s economic adviser Phil Gramm said that this country is a “nation of whiners” when it comes to the economy, the Washington Post featured its 1100 word story on Gramm’s controversial remark on the front page: “Gramm Remark Adds to McCain’s Difficulty Addressing the Economy“
Workers still lack the freedom to form unions.” - UAW President Ron Gettelfinger complaining that a union organization election is only held when 30% of workers sign a union card (emphasis mine).
“they (the UAW) created a hostile work environment” through relentless pressure to sign cards. - So much for freedom
“The American people voted to restore integrity and honesty in Washington, D.C., and the Democrats intend to lead the most honest, most open and most ethical Congress in history.” Nancy Pelosi, Nov. 2006
“It is my understanding that there are no [Gulfstream] G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess,” the staffer complained. “This is totally unacceptable…The Speaker will want to know where the planes are.” email from Pelosi’s office to the Pentagon.
What Members of Congress Say When They Think You’re Not Around
Holy crap.
Here I was, beating myself up for dumping my stocks back in early October when we hit an “all time low” and losing “only” $80K [in real dollars] from my retirement fund. I moved it all to bonds (which I’m now placing “hope” upon the Chinese ;-/ ).
My plan in late 2008/early 2009 was to gradually invest back into stocks. I’m just not gonna do it, not until I see things turning around. I’ve always been an “aggressive” investor. This current upheaval totally turns me upside down.
I don’t mean this like it may sound, but in some ways I’m glad we decided not to have kids. I’m also glad that I can reassure my mom that she will never have to worry. She’s invested wisely, and while she’s lost $$ too, we will be there for her. She can stay with us indefinitely if she needs to.
I can’t believe we’re actually facing this phase in our country. I mean, yeah, it’s been talked about for awhile, but now it’s at the “tangible” stage.
Received this email from one of my friends tonight:
This Is What the Members of Congress Say When You’re Not Around
Maureen — I was sent the below by a friend of mine who is a lobbyist.
I was coming out of the Congressional Credit Union in Longworth (that’s one of the House office buildings) and 2 Members of Congress, who shall remain nameless were passing, one going in, one coming out. I am dying to say who they were because it REALLY adds weight to the whole story, but they shall remain nameless … I will say they were both Democrats and ones that even the least political among my friends would recognize.
Their salutation to each other was, “I am taking my money out before it’s all gone.” I’m sorry but I COULDN’T help myself … I looked at them both and said, “HEY isn’t it your job to make sure the money doesn’t disappear? The American public would be real assured to hear YOUR comments.” Talk about silence. And yes 1 of them was a SENIOR Member…
And Obama says to NOT put your money in a mattress, HA!
Goll damn.
Polis turns out to be straight shooter
Most of you are unaware that in Colorado’s second congressional district, a Democrat named Jared Polis was elected to replace Mark Udall (who is Colorado’s newest Senator). CO-2, which includes Boulder, is second only to CO-1 (Denver) in it’s liberal leanings. Naturally, when Polis got through the primary, the race was essentially over. Polis is wealthy, gay and ambitious. So it is with pleasure that I report he already has established himself as a Democrat with a great degree of economic clarity and sobriety; a trait seldom seen among liberals.
In an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal last Wednesday, Polis expressed exactly the type of economic thinking that has been missing from the Democratic party (and the Republicans of late). Polis boldly swims against the tide of his own party to propose a cut in capital gains taxes on all investments in the automobile industry. In doing so, Polis essentially concedes that such taxation acts as a disincentive to investment and curtails job creation.
If we as a society place a public premium on “saving” the automobile industry from its default reorganization under Chapter 7 or Chapter 11 bankruptcy — which has been good enough for the steel and airline industries, among others — then a better manner in which to express that premium might be to establish special tax consideration for those who are willing to take on the risk. One way of doing that is to provide an exemption from capital-gains taxation on all debt or equity instruments used in the next six months to invest in the troubled auto makers.
By waiving the future capital-gains tax on all investments in the automobile industry, we enhance the projected return models and therefore the likely occurrence of a privately funded “bailout.” There are turnaround firms and funds, and they are experts at what needs to be done. Tax exemption for gains would certainly get their attention. It also wouldn’t cost taxpayers anything because it only forgoes future government revenues that wouldn’t exist absent this incentive.
Though Polis is most assuredly a committed social liberal, it is refreshing to see a guy who hasn’t yet taken office weigh in on the economic issue of the day in an independent manner. Though he is a businessman, he clearly understands the need for Congress to stay out of the business sector.
Most members of Congress and staffers on the Hill are smart people, but we should not pretend that we are better at what are so clearly other people’s jobs. One of the tremendously difficult tasks that we are ill-equipped to successfully orchestrate is restoring these three failing companies to health. As one of the members of Congress with a strong business background, I know what I don’t know in business. While I hold my colleagues in great esteem, I doubt their abilities as turnaround artists are very much superior to mine. Any pretension of a government bailout being a good deal for taxpayers should be abandoned for the insincere (or perhaps ignorant) rhetoric that it is.
Financial Security in Our Time?
And so it begins…
Bush signs economic bailout bill
Everyone happy? Nearly a trillion dollar in current and potential bad debts covered by the government in the last couple months. Paulstone cried panic, meltdow and mayhem. The Congress stampeded and the holdouts bought off to the tune of an additional $100 billion plus in earmarks and pork. So we are good, right? Maybe not…
$700 billion bailout? You ain’t seen nothin’
THE POLITICS OF BLACKNESS: Be careful what you wish for — it may just be the end game for capitalism
Credit markets to Washington: Bailout isn’t enough
Bailout Doesn’t Resolve Fears On Economy, Credit
Truth, lies and ticker tape (Spengler on the Bailout)
McCain: Bailout a ‘tourniquet’
Obama urges second stimulus after bailout passes
Relax, everything is gonna be just fine. Trust us.
Rejected!!
After convincing us all that a financial bailout of epic proportions was necessary post haste to save our country and indeed the world from imminent disaster congress rejects the $700 billion bailout. Apparently in a few short days congress managed to turn a 3 page document into a 101 page monstrosity http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/09/28/ayo08c04_xml.pdf god bless you if you have the time and patience to read through the whole thing as I honestly did not.
Consequently Wall Street suffered the largest single day point drop in history so apparently the sword of Damocles continues to hang over our heads. I try very hard to not sound like the bitter old cynic who feels that only the government could possibly be responsible for such massive inaction in time of crisis but what other conclusion could I possibly reach? Of course Barney Frank blames the Republicans http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/09/29/sot.frank.bailout.reax.cnn
and Boehner is blaming the Democrats namely Nancy Pelosi http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/09/29/sot.gop.bailout.vote.reax.cnn
However the voting resulted in a curious split with dems supporting the bill 140-95 and the GOP rejecting it 133-65. So somehow they managed to take an idea that had nearly universal support and twist into something which neither side seemed to support with much enthusiasm.
Help me out here guys. How the hell do you screw this one up?
The Courage to do Nothing
There is an increasing backlash against the biggest government meddling in private enterprise, and its takeover of whole sectors of the economy, since FDR. (Though wait until Obama tries to ram his ‘universal health care’ down your throat). The ‘whisper’ campaign against socialist notions and bailing out Wall Street ”big men” is beginning to be heard. Idiocy and massive greed got “them” to this point. Why is it my responsibility to help them get “out of it”? Actions have consequences and chickens come home to roost.
At least a few GOP’ers had the unmitigated gall to at least question why the US taxpayer should be doubly screwed; first by the banks and mortgage companies charging outrageous interest rates on “adjustable” rate mortgages once the initial “tease” rate is expired and the “homeowner” is unable to finance, and then as a taxpayer paying for the pathetically poor decision making of banks and mortgage companies.
I have customers coming in who lost their homes when their interest rates jumped to 13% and even higher on very modest priced middle class homes. Most people can’t afford a jump from $1100 a month to $2500 a month and the casualty rate among the middle class due to the insatiable greed, fraud and get rich manipulations of large numbers of unscrupulous people is staggering. Those holding the billions in potentially bad mortgage debt should be forced to negotiate with homeowners instead of bailed out by those same people now wearing the label of US taxpayer. With the government stepping in we will only be back to business as usual instead of changing the way business has been practiced in the past.
I’m not taking a hundred percent stand one way or the other on this bailout (not that it matters) and I could still be persuaded to support it, but I am suspicious of it and am glad to see some voices of caution being raised about what is now happening in D.C. As far as I can see, this does very little for the little guy, and that concerns me greatly as one of the little guys who will be desperately attempting to refinance at the end of the month to avoid possibly becoming just another statistic in two short years. The key has got to be to stop the massive cycle of foreclosures and help keep people in their houses. Anything else seems to be just putting more “lipstick on the pig”.
Quotable: “‘Just because God created the world in seven days doesn’t mean we have to pass this bill in seven days,’ said Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas.”
Or at all.
Your messenger’s quotes of the day…
”These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ”The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”
Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed.
”I don’t see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing,” Mr. Watt said.
From a NYT article entitled New Agency Proposed to Oversee Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, dated 9/11/2003. Oh by the way the new agency was proposed by the Bush administration and opposed by the Democrats. Barney and Mel are some of the guys involved in ‘fixing’ things. Be afraid, be very afraid.
The current mortgage loan crisis – ‘Oh what a tangled web we weave!’ Or ain’t socialism grand?
My friend Andre asked me a simple question. Of course I am not capable of a simple answer.
“The reason for this crisis is due to the government altering how the mortgage markets worked.”
I’m curious, PG, how the government is responsible for this. Is it somehow the fault of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (which for a long time have been private enterpises)? I tend to think that deregulation and the overabundance of loans that should never have been made through other private companies played for more of a role in this than Uncle Sam (other than his looking the other way for the last twelve or so years).
Andre, I was not specifically addressing the MACs in the quote of mine you pulled. The MACs are privately owned, but could issue securities backed by the government. They also were exempt from quite a few regulations. They are not private in any real sense of the world.
The foundation of my point in the statement you quoted was that the politicians, for their own reasons, decided it should be extremely easy to borrow money to own a home. Everyone should have the American dream. (Just like Obama will try to make higher education, and health care, free for everyone.)
They relaxed the lending requirements. They outlawed ‘redlining’, and other types of what they considered ‘discriminatory’ lending practices. In the end government, and privately, backed securities were covering loans with virtually no underwriting.
That is not the free market at work. No bank in their right mind would loan money with a contract consisting of: Stated Income, 100% To Value, and negative 1%, unless they government would back it. The government created that market through policy decisions. Hell, would you make those loans? (If one did not make enough of what once were considered questionable loans, then one risked losing Auto VA Approval and FHA and…)
Testimony by Gen. David Petraeus to the Senate Armed Services Committee.
A must read if you want to look beyond the bumper sticker sloganeering and political posturing that obscures the debate about the Iraq War.
Petraeus On The ‘Fragile And Reversible’ Situation In Iraq
…Still, security in Iraq is better than it was when Ambassador Crocker and I reported to you last September, and it is significantly better than it was 15 months ago when Iraq was on the brink of civil war and the decision was made to deploy additional US forces to Iraq.
A number of factors have contributed to the progress that has been made. First, of course, has been the impact of increased numbers of Coalition and Iraqi Forces. You are well aware of the U.S. surge. Less recognized is that Iraq has also conducted a surge, adding well over 100,000 additional soldiers and police to the ranks of its security forces in 2007 and slowly increasing its capability to deploy and employ these forces…
Petraeus should get an apology from Clinton (and Obama too)
McCain, Clinton and Obama set to question Petraeus and Crocker
McCain brings another asset into the hearing in the form of Senator Lindsey Graham. As his chief surrogate, Graham is Robin to McCain’s Batman. No one else is more in sync with the Arizona senator on Iraq. During the hearing, Graham can easily use his time during questioning to elaborate a McCain point or address another point McCain may have left out.
McCain also has Sen. Joe Lieberman to carry his torch in the Armed Services hearing. He’s an independent who votes with the Democrats on virtually every issue but the Iraq war.
Together they turn Washington in to Gotham City. McCain and Graham are the Caped Crusaders, with Lieberman filling in as Commissioner Gordon — he may not be a full-fledged Republican crime fighter, but he’s certainly a strong supporter of the cause.
Gen. Petraeus has done an absolutely outstanding job in Iraq and all sides in the Iraq debate should stop to give him due thanks as he reports back to Washington. No one, including the most ardent of Iraq hawks, believed that the fairly small size of the surge, and the new tactics wielded with it, would have such an amazing turn around on ground in Iraq as they have. McCain, DFV, and many of us have bewailed the fact that this was not implemented two years ago. If one man has been the most dead on correct on this issue it has been Sen. McCain. You can feel free to disagree with him on whatever you want to but there is no denying the fact that if the ‘McCain surge’ had been implemented two years ago with Petraeus at its head, we probably wouldn’t be talking about ‘the War’ in anything besides a historical context.
It was Shrillary herself who said that it would take a ‘willing suspension of disbelief’ to believe that the surge would be successful and took a few cheap shots at the General hoping to score a few political points. The last time the general was ‘in town’ Hillary called effectively called him a liar and MoveOn.org called him a traitor. That says everything you need to know about the mettle and mentality of those who happily dwell in the deepest, darkest and slimiest parts of the political landscape. I eagerly await her apology tomorrow as well as from others sitting on the various committees. If she had the slightest shred of integrity that woud be the first thing she would offer when she finally had the opportunity to address the General. Unfortunately, I probably await in vain.
The “Enron loophole?”
This topic has been getting a lot of play on the local radio here in the last couple of months. Is anyone familiar with this? I checked out the site that was plugged on the radio spot
http://www.closetheenronloophole.com/
and as expected it is decidely one-sided. Unfortunately all of the results I got on a google search on the topic were very similarly opinionated. They accused oil speculators of everything short of torturing kittens to drive up oil prices and make themselves rich. Not to mention the invoking of that E word which conjures images of fat cats and massive corporate fraud.
I’m generally a free trade, free market type of guy but not vehemently so, therefore I hesitate to jump on the bandwagon however I also cringe every time I need to gas up lately. I am also naturally a bit of a cynic so when I see this much negative press on a topic I assume there has to be another side. Any of you ladies or gentlemen have more in depth insight on this topic?
As one wise man once told me there’s 3 sides to every story. In this case, that of the “loophole closers,” that of the speculators and finally the truth. Econ guys you have the floor.

Senate votes to ban waterboarding
Last Saturday, the Sage linked some interesting questions regarding the use of waterboarding terrorists for the sake of vital information. Since the question of waterboarding is such a hot topic these days, I felt compelled to point out that we have waterboarded exactly three prisoners since 2003. This paltry number of prisoners subjected to the technique hardly embodies the image of thugish C.I.A. agents having their way with terrorists. But our esteemed Senate has now weighed in on the issue. They prefer we talk to terrorists the way we talked to Saddam over a period of months.
The prohibition was contained in a bill authorizing intelligence activities for the current year, which the Senate approved on a 51-45 vote. It would restrict the CIA to the 19 interrogation techniques outlined in the Army field manual. That manual prohibits waterboarding, a method that makes an interrogation subject feel he is drowning.
And what of the one Senator who has actually been subjected to real torture and has been a vocal opponent of the procedure?
Republican presidential contender Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who was tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, voted against the measure Wednesday.
And the most entertaining quote to come from a chamber of jokers;
Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York dared Bush to veto the bill, saying that the president’s Iraq war commander, Gen. David Petraeus, rejects harsh interrogation.
“If it’s good enough for General Petraeus and FBI Director Robert Mueller, it’s good enough for all of America,” Schumer said. “If the president vetoes this, he will be voting in favor of waterboarding.”
I’m sure the President is deeply concerned about your dares, Chuck. Maybe if you double-dog-dare him he’ll stick the toungues of captured terrorists to frosty flag poles.
The Last State of the Union Address for GWB
The ‘flat earthers’ strike back
Senate reports on over 400 top scientists who question Gore
I’m talking about a recent Senate Committee report on global warming. The report documents the views of over 400 well qualified scientists who severely question the views about human causation of global warming most popularly espoused Nobel prize winner Al Gore. The report lists scientists from many top tier and government organizations, including Harvard University and NASA.
In a disturbing paragraph, the report reveals that such global warming “skeptics” are often fearful to disclose their opinons:
Many of the scientists featured in this report consistently stated that numerous colleagues shared their views, but they will not speak out publicly for fear of retribution. Atmospheric scientist Dr. Nathan Paldor, Professor of Dynamical Meteorology and Physical Oceanography at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, author of almost 70 peer-reviewed studies, explains how many of his fellow scientists have been intimidated.
“Many of my colleagues with whom I spoke share these views and report on their inability to publish their skepticism in the scientific or public media,” Paldor wrote.
That’s scary. It’s difficult for me to ponder a world where facts are being intentionally withheld from the public in order to foster a desired public advocacy. It’s petrifying to think that those facts are in science.
I keep getting told over and over again that the issue has been settled. We’ve just got a extremely short time to drastically change our lifestyles, economies and culture or the world will end (while we give a pass to places like India and China but that’s another story). Those of us who have not joined the anguished mobs wailing and gnashing their teeth over their carbon footprint, or have dared to bring forth yet another generation to consume and pollute, are flat earthers wallowing in our ignorance and selfishness. But the more I look into it the more I see the ideological and political agendas behind the Green movement and the less I see of a truly honest attempt to understand climate change and seek sane ways to reduce the impact of humans upon the environment while simultaneously seeking to improve the conditions of the vast amount of humanity that lives in squalor and poverty. Increasingly, especially when it comes to Al Gore, a brave few are venturing forth to point out the fact that the Emperor has no clothes. Some may still choose to follow this pied piper of gloom and doom, but I will not be among them.
Dems Eat Their Own.
The Democratic Party has never been a single coherent group; they are more like a loose confederation of warring tribes. This has become more apparent as we move down to crunch time at the polls. Plummeting numbers has put the Hilary Clinton Campaign into a screeching panic, prompting her to lob mutiple shots into the Obama camp by proxy – this time via the Hubby of NH ex-governor Shaheen. As the Beast Dad used to say: “She makes the Cannon Balls and he fires em.” Shaheen fell on his sword as any good centurion will do for Ceasar – or in this case, Agrippina.

Of course, this time the bong blew up in their face.
With Hilary and Obama savaging each other, Edwards expects to pick up the scraps. The only person in the race who has run (and lost) as a real-honest-to-gosh candidate in an actual Presidential Election (which he lost), perhaps he will be the best choice.
For the Republicans.
Did we mention he lost?
Meanwhile the do-nothing Dem-Controlled Congress has all but collapsed, with much finger pointing at each other. They caved on the budget impasse, reempowering President Bush and the GOP as the party of fiscal restraint.
It’s been a bad week for the Donkey.
Henry Hyde, 1924 – 2007

Henry Hyde quietly passed away early this morning. And while much can be said about the career of this honorable Congressman, his lasting legacy will be this: he had the common sense to steer the federal government away from funding abortions with taxpayer money. A year prior to the Hyde Amendment, upwards of 300,000 poor women were given taxpayer funded abortions. Since that time, the number has been essentially zero. Hyde was also a leader in passing a ban on the barbaric procedure known as the partial birth abortion. He was 83.
Sip a Milkshake with your girl before she shops at night for shoes in, well, in….Baghdad?
“I believe … that this war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything, as is shown by the extreme violence in Iraq this week,”
It seems that even though we lost the war young lovers are meeting in cafes after dark for romantic dinners. The surge is such a bust that Baghdad is coming alive after dark.
The gaudy orange, green and purple electronic palm trees flashing in the dark alert you that you’re getting close to one of Baghdad’s bustling nightspots.
The palms, like a mirage, can be seen from way down the darkened streets, lighting up the night and giving a promise of normality in the otherwise bleak and deserted capital, ravaged by four years of insurgency and sectarian strife. And then, suddenly, you’ve arrived and the mirage has become an oasis of generator-driven light; a colourful jumble of trendy juice bars, cosy restaurants, fruit shops, roadside eateries and fish vendors, where children play, families dine and lovers meet.
CO Governor Ritter, Common Cause, and League of Women Voters Caught in Conspiracy to Rig the Political System
When Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter recently opened up state government to Big Labor, he insisted that it was a minor, moderate move, and that the howls of protest from the GOP and the media were excessive. Now it emerges that the governor was in fact making payment on an IOU, using his public office to complete a scheme carefully cooked up by the ostensibly non-partisan outfits Common Cause and The League of Women Voters. Under the concoction, almost no person or entity is allowed to match contributions with unions, whose forced confiscations are afforded a unique, and unprecedented, special security under Colorado law.Common Cause and The League of Women Voters first lied about the fact that they were non-partisan (they are activist, left-wing, pro-Democrat front organizations), and then cashed a check for services rendered. I will admit that it is a bit awe-inspiring to witness a group whose stated raison d’état is to clean up moneyed influence in the legislature, buy a loaded, one-sided set-aside conceived to let one hugely rich entity funnel money to a single Party, while constraining the ability of groups or even individuals to compete with the coming influx.Of course, if the Bush White House engaged in anything like this, lefty blogs would hold polls asking whether he were the anti-Christ, Andre would insist that this alone makes him the Worst. President. Ever. and would express (seemingly sincere) astonishment that we didn’t immediately buy into the propaganda, and Keith Olbermann would announce, in a 23-minute Special Comment, that it saddens him to announce that the time has come for Americans to rush the White House and tear the limbs off of all living members of the President’s staff and family.
Me, I’m not really upset at all. This is what political parties do in the grown-up world. And when the voters (and business leaders) of Colorado decided to give the Democrats complete control of state government, they should have understood that the Democrats would respond by trying to pay off their political supporters and permanently freeze out the Republicans.
If only Andre and the other leftists understood this. Instead, they have embarrassed themselves for seven years with their hysterical rhetoric and their childish view of the world. It would at least be nice if they could see that Democratic politicians are not inherently any different from Republican politicians, since this is among the most child-like views they hold.
When Democrats took power, I detailed many things that the seemingly-angelic Democrats would soon embark upon, and asked whether Andre, Wes, and the others would notice. On every front, I have been proven correct, and in each case ConClub’s Democrats have proven themselves little more than Democratic Party cheerleaders.
But since they have already flipped on the issue of bloated government spending, I’m not hopeful that they can change.
Andre and the self-loathers; more on fiscal responsibility
In the thread on fiscal responsibility, Andre links an article about Warren Buffett and then accuses us of drinking the Kool Aid? Earth to Andre! Warren Buffett pays fewer in taxes than his secretary because his earnings aren’t in the form of wages! I thought everyone knew that dividends were taxed at a lower percentage! Does anyone here think that Warren Buffett earns money from anything other than dividends and interest? If this isn’t the case, someone should fire his CPA and hire our own Guru. And if he were so worried about his secretary, perhaps he should pay her more than $60,000 a year. Moreover, if Warren Buffett is so concerned about paying taxes, what is stopping him from writing a check? The hypocrisy is unreal! But that link aside, Andre really shows the rotten undercurrent of today’s entitlement society.
Prior to the Buffet link, Andre brags that the congressional hogs at the trough only want our money for “things like repairing bridges and levies, supporting irrigation projects, and yes, some pork.” Wes counters with “There IS a lot of government waste in this country, but combatting that by eliminating stuff that falls under the category of “getting shit done” is unacceptable.” How far we have come when it becomes the national government and taxpayers problem to repair every worn out piece of infrastructure Andre and Wes see fit. All in the name of “getting shit done” I guess. I suppose they enjoy their tax dollars fixing bridges in Indiana and funding senior centers in New York. Thomas Jefferson would be so proud. Then they want to insure my children despite the fact that they are doing just fine (even though I make well below the desired Democrat cap of their proposed S-CHIP). As long as you say “its for the kids” Andre swims to that chum like a hungry shark.
If Nancy Pelosi and John Murtha told Andre and Wes that we needed to fund important research projects on space aliens, they would come on here vigorously defending such nonsense in the name of national security. And then they would say something about “the kids” or Bush’s “war of choice.” Finally Andre would post some link that tries to show how selfish conservatives are but only makes liberals and congressional GOP’ers look like the contemptible, lying demgogues and whores that they really are.
Welcome to the Era of Fiscal Responsibility
The Congress has overridden the President’s veto of the $23 billion water bill, and the the New York Times analyzed it thusly:
The vote of 79 to 14 sent a clear signal that the Democrats in control of Congress plan to test the power of the White House on other fronts, and it gave Republicans a chance to show distance from an unpopular president heading into a tough election year.
Nonsense. It showed that the Democrats were lying when they promised they’d govern with austerity, which everyone but lefty bloggers already knew, and that in Washington, pork will always triumph over both principle and politics.
But the Democrats aren’t content with the media spin that massive spending=standing up to Bush; they want to take it even farther. How else can you explain Nancy Pelosi’s deliciously illogical insistence that it actually IS fiscally responsible to blow money!
“Our commitment to real fiscal responsibility — no new deficit spending — contrasts sharply with the trillions of dollars in record deficits accumulated by the Bush administration. We are hopeful that the president will reconsider his chronic use of the veto to block the priorities of the American people, from water resources to ending the war in Iraq to providing health care for 10 million children.”
So Pelosi’s answer to trillions of dollars in deficits is to fund water projects and health care for 10 million children. If the Democrats can pull off this spin, they can do anything.
It is high time the left apologize for their brazen lies about the Surge
Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Andre and Wes should appear before the entire nation, hats in hand, and apologize to the troops, General Petraeus, the President, and the American public for their attempts to undermine what has amounted to the most splendid military tactic of this new century. Officer candidates at West Point will study Petraeus’ strategy fifty years from now.
From Michael Yon:
“Al Qaeda in Iraq is defeated,” according to Sheik Omar Jabouri, spokesman for the Iraqi Islamic Party and a member of the widespread and influential Jabouri Tribe. Speaking through an interpreter at a 31 October meeting at the Iraqi Islamic Party headquarters in downtown Baghdad, Sheik Omar said that al Qaeda had been “defeated mentally, and therefore is defeated physically,” referring to how clear it has become that the terrorist group’s tactics have backfired. Operatives who could once disappear back into the crowd after committing an increasingly atrocious attack no longer find safe haven among the Iraqis who live in the southern part of Baghdad. They are being hunted down and killed. Or, if they are lucky, captured by Americans.
Colonel Ricky Gibbs, the American brigade commander with responsibility for the Rashid District in south Baghdad today told me, “So goes South Baghdad goes Baghdad.” General Petraeus had told me similar things about the importance of South Baghdad. In fact, Rashid is quickly developing into what might be one of the final serious battlegrounds of the war.
It is official, the man has no shame. Phony Harry Reid is taking credit for the Phony Soldier Letter auction
In what has generated the biggest WTF out of yours truly in a while, the Honorable Harry “Let’s Just Quit” Reid is trying to horn in on Rush’s idea of raising money fo
r orphan’s. WLS over at Patterico’s Pontifications has a good take on it…
The letter Harry Reid sent to the head of Clear Channel Communications sold on E-Bay for more than $2 million this morning. The letter was part of the “phony soldier” canard ginned up by the Dems as a response to the blowback suffered by MoveOn.Org after the “General Betray-Us” ad in the NYT.
Reid’s letter — a lame substitute for the GOP sponsored Senate Resolution that denounced the MoveOn ad with 72 votes, including 25 Dems — garnered only the signatures of 42 Dems and 0 Reps.
This guy and his sidekick Speaker Nancy “Let the Progressives Eat Cake” Pelosi are on a great r
oll. Just what have they accomplished? Please, I am serious, what? All these people have done is abdicate their responsibility in governing this country, and run a planned (albeit incredible poorly planned) and concerted effort to embarrass and attack the president and his Party. All they have accomplished is to shoot themselves in the foot. Read the rest of this entry

Part of me says that a Republican offensive is just what the doctor ordered in response to Harry Reid’s goofy comments regarding then candidate Obama. That part of me wants to get back at the Dems for the scores of times that anyone with conservative credentials has been made to feel bad or resign from whatever post they held over remarks that were not cleared by the sensitivity police at various universities.
