Pimps. Drug pushers. Blackmail. Slumlords. Price-gouging. Kidney selling. These are but a few of the many characters and activities we’ve been taught to despise since we were young children. Few of us would argue that child labor is a good thing; economist Walter Block disagrees – as does David Boaz of the Cato Institute:
“If we say that the United States should pressure very poor countries to abolish child labor, then what will happen to these children? They’re not suddenly going to go to the country day school. They may be out selling their bodies on the street. That is not an improvement over working in a t-shirt factory.”
I highly recommend delving into the ideas of Australian philosopher David Stove (1927-1994). For me, reading Against the Idols of the Age, an anthology of his work, was a good decision. I received inspiration, not because the book reassured me, as in “don’t worry, everything will work out just fine.” On the contrary, it paints a grim picture of the state of Western intellectual life. Rather, I was inspired because Stove lays bare many of the absurdities—the “idols” of the book’s title—that today pass for sacred, unassailable maxims. He shows that one can unravel the knot of politically correct dogma in which we are entwined, and do it in a clear, commonsense way. One thing that the entire budget/debt/deficit argument has done for us is continued discussion out in ether-space on the name calling. It’s gotten pretty out of hand. Jeffrey Kuhner of the WorldTribune.com has a piece from Friday called Tea Party ‘terrorists’? The Ruling Class Comes Unglued that is worth a read. Despite the president winning this one, the rhetoric has been ratcheted up considerably. Mr. Kuhner believes this is the beginning of the end for the socialist utopia dream in the US. We’ll see.

Today’s daily digest had two articles presenting the FDA’s case that regulating medical apps is a good idea and they should do this. They can be found here and here.
Since the FDA routinely approves drugs that have to be recalled due to patient deaths – this is stuff that goes in the body and is digested – and allows the seed producers of genetically modified grains such as soybeans (that would be Monsanto) to police themselves and does not require animal testing on the crops even when genes are added to the seed – also, something that is digested – what makes FDA officials think that regulating mobile medical apps is a trustworthy endeavor for them?

In my daily perusal of various article digests, I came across an article from Yahoo!News titled Down but not Out: Voices of the Long-Term Unemployed. Having more than one family member who has not had an actual full time job in some time, and as I am about to join the ranks of the underemployed soon myself (the job still exists, but my hours are being slashed – and worse, the person “in charge” has no clue about some of my job functions that are being eliminated, the ones that will pull us out of the mess we’re in eventually), I started reading the article with some interest.

Our government has left us while we were working so hard to take care of our responsibilities at home. Our government has taken a life of its own- it no longer responds to our wishes. This is what happens when the cult of “tolerance, diversity, sensitivity, and multiculturalism” begins to capture the military related institutions of this country. They’ve already captured the colleges, entertainment, and the media, and the rest of our societal and cultural institutions are under full-scale assault. We all sneer at political correctness and the ‘isms’ of the Left that accompany it but it is deadly serious struggle we are engaged in. It is gut-wrenching to watch a culture and a people begin to slit their own throats and surrender on all fronts. As conservatives we see these attacks on common sense, our heritage, and our culture coming. We warn against it, rail against it, and predict the eventual outcome of it, but for whatever reason we seem to be helpless to prevent these things from happening. In this never-ending culture war, that the Left has declared and the Right is forced to fight, conservatives are always losing unless they win and liberals are always winning unless they lose. We have traveled that far down a dangerous path that eventually only leads to damnation and ruin.
Progressivism is the most insidious of fifth columns that undermines the traditions and institutions that once made this country great. It is really an amazing thing to watch as one by one the dominoes are toppled as the Left continues to wage its ruthless ideological war on all that is true, right, decent, moral, and rooted in tradition, religion, and Western culture.
VMI Celebrates Muslim Invasion, Brutal 781-year Occupation of Spain

Next month his beloved Virginia Military Institute will be convening a celebration commemorating the 1300th anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Spain under the Muslim warlord Tariq ibn Ziyad in 711 A.D. The March 23-25 celebration entitled “711-2011: East Meets West” and organized by VMI’s Center for Leadership and Ethics, is scheduled to feature standard Muslim apologists Reza Aslan and Akbar Ahmed. VMI Superintendent Gen. J.H. Binford Peay has even filmed an invitation to the celebration.
No word if VMI’s World War II commemoration will be entitled “Germany meets Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Belgium, France, Norway, The Netherlands and Russia”.
Event organizers describe the event as follows:
We celebrate the 1300th anniversary of Tariq ibn Ziyad’s crossing of the Straits of Gibraltar, setting into motion the fusion between two worlds. The agenda will tell the vital story of the achievements when Muslims, Christians, and Jews thrived side by side in Western Europe, building a society that lit the Dark Ages. Experts will discuss how to transform education, promote tolerance, political reform, and advance human development so that we can emulate the spirit and triumphs of the early years.
This should make the Left scratch their heads… Nah… It won’t, but isn’t it funny how a company that has been so tightly bound to the U.S. “right”, labeled down-right insane, could have these results? Should we even begin to believe that there is more common sense out there than previously thought? CNN’s ratings are in the toilet and their personalities are going to FOX. Who IS right, here, after all?!!
A friend and I recently engaged in a brief discussion about a change (if any) in the dynamics of Egypt’s current revolt situation considering one difference… guns in the hands of the people. It makes one wonder. A proponent of individual gun rights, I find myself somewhat impressed at the results over there. Not only do the protesters not have arms, but the military is refraining from firing their weapons, other than “soft” ammunition when needed. Are the Egyptians just that much more civilized?

The repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is a DISGRACE that cannot stand!
The Left hoped that by defining homosexuality as an orientation that cannot be changed, rather than a chosen behavior as has been recognized for millenia, they could exploit the goodwill of the civil rights struggle. Civil rights, like feminism, is a positive philosophy when promulgated by persons of integrity with no hidden agendas. However, those of us who were around in those times, or who study real history, know there were many communists and America-haters therein marching with genuine people of good will. It is not the conservatives with resume credits we hear from today, but Charlie Rangel and Jesse Jackson – those who exploit their past. They are exploiters first, and not those persons of consistent character.

Chechnya will never be quelled so long as a madman like Moscow’s hand-picked strongman, Ramzan Kadirov, is allowed to run roughshod over the citizenry, driving them to extremists who have more in common with Al Qaeda rather than the indigenous Sufi movements which are more prevalent in the region. Expect to see a lot more attacks like this one soon in Chechnya, possibly igniting a third war in the region in the past 20 years.
A shameful idiot of a Governator goes to Moscow and looks like an industrial tycoon in comparison to the locals, who are salivating at making a pseudo-Silicon Valley near Moscow that will, most likely, simply turn into a place for either the Putin/Medvyedev axis or the Russian Mafia to shake down and scare off any investment. It gets worse as Anna Chapman, the “sexy spy,” (right…) who bumbled her way into fame gets hired by a bank for her “advice.” Pity poor Russia.
Russian racism is nothing new. Anyone who doesn’t look like a run-of-the-mill Slav, even if you are as pale as the Georgians are, gets called the local equivalent of a nigger (and you’d better believe they find it as offensive as an African-American would). Russian Muslims in general are being treated in a disgraceful and inhuman way in Perm, Siberia, and insurrections are beginning to happen against officers who treat conscripts harshly. More bad news for the Russian Bear, I’m afraid.
