Full Speech: Daniel Hannan at CPAC 2012

I can’t say that I am Mr. Hannan’s biggest fan. But I am probably among the top five. He has been a fearless and vocal voice for the preservation of Western Civilization and conservative values and deserves great praise for that. His warning not to let the progressives and the Obama administration lead us down the road to Europeonization must be heeded and taken to heart. For that is their goal, and it is our mission to not allow this still-great nation to follow that road to cultural and economic ruin. Read the rest of this entry

The Stove of Inspiration

I highly recommend delving into the ideas of Australian philosopher David Stove (1927-1994). For me, reading Against the Idols of the Age, an anthology of his work, was a good decision. I received inspiration, not because the book reassured me, as in “don’t worry, everything will work out just fine.” On the contrary, it paints a grim picture of the state of Western intellectual life. Rather, I was inspired because Stove lays bare many of the absurdities—the “idols” of the book’s title—that today pass for sacred, unassailable maxims. He shows that one can unravel the knot of politically correct dogma in which we are entwined, and do it in a clear, commonsense way. Think of it as a housecleaning for the brain, sweeping away cobwebs in various unlikely places. Read the rest of this entry

Is This Really Incompetence?

One of the most counter-productive notions now circulating through the conservative blogosphere (and elsewhere) is the assertion that “Obama is incompetent.” There are several variants:

  • Obama is stupid, or at least not intelligent
  • He’s in over his head
  • His advisers don’t have a clue
  • The stress is overwhelming him
  • His narcissism has led him down the wrong path
  • If we at least had a smart liberal, such as Hillary Clinton, things wouldn’t be so bad

Etc.

There is an element of truth in each of these claims, but in the scheme of things they constitute nothing more than a fanciful distraction from the ugly reality that is staring us in the face. Read the rest of this entry

The Defeat of the Mind

One of the more astute contemporary observers of Western decline is the French writer Alain Finkielkraut. In his 1987 book La Défaite de la Pensée (The Defeat of the Mind), he traces the lineage of the multiculturalist disease, which, he argues, has provided much of the impetus for a widespread abandonment of the intellect throughout the Western world. This stance, and subsequent tracts in the same vein, have earned him near-pariah status among most of the “intellectuals” of Western Europe. Read the rest of this entry

NATO on defensive over strikes close to Gadhafi

NATO have given a picture-perfect representation as to why they cannot and should never have been trusted in leading air raids against Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi’s government.

That they would begin to cower from people like China, Russia and Brazil (the first two are utter Human Rights abusers, and in Brazil, they indigenous community may have some unflattering words for the central government in Brasilia) shows that they have neither the spine nor the stomach to finish off Gadhafi.

It is far better that they pack their bags and go home rather than try to impress fellow Euro-weenies and play soldier.

VMI Celebrates Muslim Invasion, Brutal 781-year Occupation of Spain

There are no words…

This is what happens when the cult of “tolerance, diversity, sensitivity, and multiculturalism” begins to capture the military related institutions of this country. They’ve already captured the colleges, entertainment, and the media, and the rest of our societal and cultural institutions are under full-scale assault. We all sneer at political correctness and the ‘isms’ of the Left that accompany it but it is deadly serious struggle we are engaged in. It is gut-wrenching to watch a culture and a people begin to slit their own throats and surrender on all fronts. As conservatives we see these attacks on common sense, our heritage, and our culture coming. We warn against it, rail against it, and predict the eventual outcome of it, but for whatever reason we seem to be helpless to prevent these things from happening. In this never-ending culture war, that the Left has declared and the Right is forced to fight, conservatives are always losing unless they win and liberals are always winning unless they lose. We have traveled that far down a dangerous path that eventually only leads to damnation and ruin.

Progressivism is the most insidious of fifth columns that undermines the traditions and institutions that once made this country great. It is really an amazing thing to watch as one by one the dominoes are toppled as the Left continues to wage its ruthless ideological war on all that is true, right, decent, moral, and rooted in tradition, religion, and Western culture.

VMI Celebrates Muslim Invasion, Brutal 781-year Occupation of Spain

Stonewall Jackson is rolling over in his grave.

Next month his beloved Virginia Military Institute will be convening a celebration commemorating the 1300th anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Spain under the Muslim warlord Tariq ibn Ziyad in 711 A.D. The March 23-25 celebration entitled “711-2011: East Meets West” and organized by VMI’s Center for Leadership and Ethics, is scheduled to feature standard Muslim apologists Reza Aslan and Akbar Ahmed. VMI Superintendent Gen. J.H. Binford Peay has even filmed an invitation to the celebration.

No word if VMI’s World War II commemoration will be entitled “Germany meets Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Belgium, France, Norway, The Netherlands and Russia”.

Event organizers describe the event as follows:

We celebrate the 1300th anniversary of Tariq ibn Ziyad’s crossing of the Straits of Gibraltar, setting into motion the fusion between two worlds.  The agenda will tell the vital story of the achievements when Muslims, Christians, and Jews thrived side by side in Western Europe, building a society that lit the Dark Ages. Experts will discuss how to transform education, promote tolerance, political reform, and advance human development so that we can emulate the spirit and triumphs of the early years.

Dave’s Quote of the Day

Dear Senator:

Before you vote on “Don’t Ask – Don’t Tell” you should be able to clearly answer the following:

“What does it mean to be openly gay in the military?”

By voting to repeal, it can probably be assumed that you are condoning consenting sexual encounters in the shower or the barracks.

Worldwide terror: Stockholm bombs show global reach of militant Islam

It gets worse and worse for Muslims of good will to have to apologize for the monsters in their midst who wreak havoc in the West.  It is bad enough to see innocents in the so-called Ummah getting slaughtered by savages.  It’s a whole other problem with Muslims bring their cancers to our lands.  Most come to make a life for themselves and their families, to adapt and assimilate, and to be left alone when they worship.  Their bad apples need to be gotten rid of, and harshly, if good will is to be completely restored between Muslim and Westerner.

Rep.-Elect Lt. Col. Allen West– a True American Patriot

It’s no secret. I’d vote for Col. West for POTUS in a heartbeat. I’ve been keeping an eye on him as an up-and-comer ever since his CPAC speech.

THIS is the definition of a leader, and one we’ve sorely needed since Reagan. No politically correct B.S. here.

Plus, notice how well-spoken he is. West doesn’t need a teleprompter. He speaks confidently, and from the heart.

Words of wisdom from Dennis Prager

On the eve of Election Day 2010, I received this via email.
A Q & A in May at University of Denver. Question is “What is the single threat to the USA?”

I never tire of Prager. Listen also to his comments about the United States vs. the United Nations on increasing good on Earth, and electing Iran (of all countries) to the commission on the status of women.

Excerpt:

…This is not a presidential election, and is the most important election in modern American history. This November is a referendum on what we want America to be…. You can love America, and be an awful American. You can love your children and be an awful parent. (These things have to be spelled out to the left because they like to distort everything we say…) the issue is you have different values than America was founded on.

Folks, Abraham Lincoln said that the United States is the last best hope for Earth… for mankind. It will not be the last best hope for mankind if it becomes like western Europe. Nobody has ever said Norway is the last best hope for mankind. I know I’ll be attacked as anti-Norwegian because anything that we say is race-based. So with the risk of being considered anti-Scandinavian in my essence, may I say that nobody says Sweden, Norway or Denmark is the last best hope for mankind, nor have they said that since 1603 about France. And so it is only being said about the USA— this is the force for good on this Earth. It’s not peace activists that liberated Auschwitz. It’s military people who liberated Auschwitz…

Cyberwar: Round 1 Goes To The West…

Gregg Keizer and Richi Jennings writing over at Computerworld have noted the negative impact on Iran’s nuclear program of a raging Stuxnet infection. (Perhaps Helena, MT’s progressive superintendent needs to move to Iran where they’re more tolerant of unpopular mandated lessons–but about computer security–not teaching little kids about sex!)

More than a decade ago think tankers began seriously considering cyberwar. (see the Wikipedia entry here.) Sci-fi authors have been bantering about it since the 60s and probably even earlier. One might even go so far as to argue that Orwell’s Big Brother is more akin to the ubiquitous, massively parallel information-based societies of America, Japan, S. Korea, Germany, France, Canada, Great Britain, and many others, including tiny Israel, than to any group of secret human spies. When I was building an Army website in 2005 I suggested the need for a DoD branch dedicated to information security (beyond the charter of the NSA). The Pentagon finally created Cyber Command this May.

Free Speech, Hate Crimes, Bold Truth and Cunning Lies

WARNING AND DISCLAIMER: This post may make some people angry. The thoughts and comments expressed are mine alone and do not necessarily reflect the consensus opinion at ConstitutionClub.org.

Today USA Today ran, “Is burning Quran a hate crime or a free speech issue?” When Terry Jones’s church decided to burn the Koran, I believe they felt moved to express a bold truth. On the other hand, by “protecting” the Judeo-Christian Bible (even as it denounces, denies and contradicts it), Islam institutionally propagates the craftiest of deceptions. In Eden, the serpent, being more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made, said, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Did he actually lie? No, he manipulated and deceived Adam and Eve into believing a tiny falsehood about God: That God was withholding his best from them. The Enemy planted and cultivated a subtle fear, feeding the tiniest bit of pride by asking an inflammatory question.

Going further, the successful deceiver next indoctrinates the deceived using a succession of increasingly outlandish lies. This was perhaps best noted by Adolph Hitler who said, “By means of shrewd lies, unremittingly repeated, it is possible to make people believe that heaven is hell and hell heaven. The greater the lie, the more readily it will be believed.” This progression leads to the downfall of nations, cultures and societies. It tends to accelerate most under powerfully charismatic people appealing to our selfish natures. This may be physical gratification, our personal rights, greed, justice, and self-righteousness. It decelerates under successful messages encouraging self-sacrifice and unconditional love.

Glenn Beck – Restoring Honor Rally 2010 Video

On Saturday some half a million plus patriots descended upon Washington D.C. to call for the restoration of American values and to honor those brave men and women who are serving this nation in the military. I have been receiving multiple links about the Restoring Honor rally held on 8-28-10 all day from a variety of people. Our own Conclub blogger MoK was in attendance and I hope that we will hear a first person report once she returns and has a chance to fill us in.

It was a fairly bold and risky move to hold the rally on the anniversary, and indeed at the same location, as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have A Dream” speech. But in the end the publicity was great, the inclusion of Dr. Aveda King (the niece of Martin Luther King) was brilliant, the raising of over $5 1/2 million dollars in scholarship money for the children of slain soldiers was noble, and the as usual well-behaved and peaceful crowd in the hundreds of thousands showed the nation that the activists on the Right are far from the racist crazies that the media and the Left have been furiously attempting to portray them as. Instead, they are dedicated American patriots who care deeply about their nation and its future.

OK, yes… this may be over-the-top…

…. but Mr. Mo and I are planning on being well out of the D.C. Metro area by 2011, for several reasons.

What really bothers me is that I’m not the paranoid type, but I see the path this country is going down and unless we seriously reverse it, we’re headed for this.

Selfishly, I’d like to think it happens well after 2017.

The Year America Dissolved, by Paul Craig Roberts

Constitution Death Watch Today

Anywhere from 25,000 to 50,000 people showed up for a final ‘kill the bill’ rally today as we stand on the brink of seeing one of the most blatantly intrusive and unconstitutional bills in the history of the Republic pass the House of Representatives. Tonight, many are in front of the Capitol building holding an all night vigil. Chances are the vote will pass so the next step to ponder is what the reaction needs to be. Multiple state attorney generals have lawsuits in place and ready to file as soon as it becomes law. Many states are readying to pass laws that would make it illegal for any entity to require its citizens to purchase health insurance. Others have notified the federal government that they will not cooperate or implement such a scheme if it becomes law. I hope we see massive civil disobedience and non-compliance by businesses and individuals of all kinds. And, of course, every single person who votes for this bill needs to pay with the loss of their congressional seat this fall.

The Manhattan Declaration

I signed it, and so should you. A truthful and powerful declaration.

The last paragraph reads:

”Because we honor justice and the common good, we will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia, or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriages or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family. We will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar’s. But under no circumstances will we render to Caesar what is God’s.”

The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience

It is one thing to judge, and another to excuse. This is neither. I actually found this rather benign, but at the same time taking a stand for the foundations of civilization; the family and respect for human life. If it was hateful I wouldn’t even link to it. If anything, it is merely a formal declaration of what many of us believe. It is a warning shot across the bow of the U.S.S. liberal agenda that we will not compromise our fundamental religious beliefs no matter what the state may say. I have been accused of religious intolerance. This brings together numerous Catholic archbishops and evangelical leaders of various stripes. And I couldn’t be happier with political, ideological, and theological alliances when it advances my personal agenda and beliefs. I will gladly partner with the Mormon church to help preserve traditional marriage in California and with Catholics on the issue of sanctity of life as we see here. I like the spectrum and caliber of the signers I see here, and am proud to join my smallest of voices with theirs.

DISPUTATION OF DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER
ON THE POWER AND EFFICACY OF
INDULGENCES

While we love our Catholic brothers and sisters we Protestants owe a great debt to Martin Luther and his courage on this day. My oldest daughter (12) just finished a fairly extensive study of him in school so she got excited when she saw I was posting this. At the time we had a good conversation about the Biblical teachings concerning salvation and Martin Luther’s emphasis on faith over works (though faith without works is dead) which we continue to abide by to this day as practicing,  Bible-believing Protestant Christians. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and breadth of her knowledge and understanding of the subject. As the son of the Protestant version of a priest I guess I should be thankful of the abandonment of celibacy by the Protestant clergy through the example of Luther himself otherwise I probably wouldn’t be here to enlighten, entertain and enrage.

Liberalism: The Seductive Temptress

You can listen to this column here.

seductivetemptressblond

The modern political persuasion called Liberalism can be compared to a beautiful, seductive temptress.  Alluring and destined to feel good for a while but after a fling with this wily ideology one is left realizing that the intoxicating goddess was more like a cheap prostitute. This seducer of the mind and soul leaves one intellectually and spiritually bankrupt, and infected with a life long hatred of tradition, morals and values. The Liberal or Progressive ideology is definitely a feel good political philosophy. As the Bible so wisely warns us to resist the temptations of the flesh so must we resist the emotional temptation and seduction of modern Liberalism.

Hooray for Israel or, if you prefer, it’s about time…

A year’s intel gathering yields ‘alpha hits’

More than 170 targets were hit by IAF aircraft throughout the day. At least 230 Gazans were killed and over 780 were wounded, according to Palestinian sources. Officials said at least 15 civilians were among the dead.

The IDF released a list of some of the targets hit: the Hamas headquarters and training camp in Tel Zatar; the “Palestinian Prisoner Tower” in Gaza City that was turned into a Hamas operations center and armory; the Hamas police academy, which was bombed during a graduation ceremony, killing 70-80 people; training camps in southern and central Gaza; the former office of Yasser Arafat in Gaza City that is now used by Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh; and the Izzadin Kassam Brigades headquarters in the northern Gaza Strip.

hamasbombing
Update:
The Israeli assault on Hamas continues. I can only wonder what the response from the US would be if bloodthirsty terrorists calling for its extermination had launched thousands of rocket attacks from just over the border in Mexico. Would the world be wringing it’s hands and whining about “disproportionate response” and assorted nonsense? And would we care if they did? The answer is no. Israel is a modern, sovereign, civilized state that has every right to punish and destroy those who so eagerly seek it’s own destruction. There can be no peace in the Middle East until the Arabs decide that Israel has the right to exist, and the right to protect itself. Israel has said that they will not allow another Hezbollah type terrorist state to be established on their border. And I support their effort to prevent that from happening.  I do not necessarily cheerlead war. In fact, I hate the suffering, loss and misery that war causes. But I do cheerlead necessary and just wars and the destruction of the cult of Islamic jihadism wherever it rears it’s ugly head.

Defiant Hamas hits Israel with dozens of rockets

Intensified rocket strikes by Gaza militants, which triggered the Israeli offensive, have revealed the expanding range of missiles that are making larger cities farther inside Israel vulnerable.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) – Palestinian militants sent a deadly barrage of missiles flying deep into Israel on Monday, demonstrating that Hamas still had firepower three days into Israel’s punishing air offensive in Gaza. Three Israelis were killed and two seriously wounded. Palestinian health officials put the three-day death toll in Gaza at 364; the U.N. said the total included at least 62 civilians.

In Monday’s attacks, Israel focused its bombing on the houses of Hamas field operatives in a campaign meant to tear at the roots of the extremist group ruling Gaza. Israel’s defense minister promised a “war to the bitter end against Hamas” and allied militants.

The Chemistry of a Dysfunctional Democracy

I have been in correspondence this week with Allen J. Duffis who is the editor of  The Conservative Independent. He describes himself as a “middle of the road” conservative (in stark contrast to yours truly). I do find him to have an interesting and intellectual approach to a variety of subjects. He sent me the following article which I believe is definitely worth reading and perhaps pondering a bit. His views on the end results of hyper-capitalism mirror mine in many ways. There are those of us on the Right who are often mercilessly pummeled for not cheerleading economic institutions or policies that are exploitative, economically unpatriotic or are dismantling the middle class, yet I sincerely believe in the old adage that in the end ‘the truth shall set you free’.

The Chemistry of a Dysfunctional Democracy

The end of the article makes a point that is worth repeating here:

Historically, youth as a political movement and force has an incredibly tragic and quite often bloody history. It is wise to remember that Russia’s Joseph Stalin, Germany’s Adolph Hitler, Communist China’s Mao Tse-Tung, Cuba’s Fidel Castro and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, among others, were ushered into office and the power by a wave of predominately youth driven movements. All of these men (initially including Hitler) possessing charismatic and ingratiating character appeal and mesmerizing speech making capabilities, rode into power behind a Socialist banner and almost immediately began making sweeping changes to their country’s political and social landscape.

Think about those statistics for a moment and digest their implications carefully. In retrospect, when afforded the opportunity by history, very much enamored with ideals, youth has chosen very badly just about every time they have been handed the chance to make a difference in a society.

Now we have a new totally untested and inexperienced president, Barack Obama, who leans very much to the Liberal Left – almost to the point of positioning himself horizontal to a Socialist discipline. He has a charismatic personality that is ingratiating, and possesses a memorizing speech making capability. And he has advocated the making of sweeping changes to the American political and social landscape.

A scary comparison of historic parallels – isn’t it?

How Christianity Shaped the West

This idea of the preciousness and equal worth of every human being is largely rooted in Christianity. Christians believe that God places infinite value on every human life. Christian salvation does not attach itself to a person’s family or tribe or city. It is an individual matter. And not only are Christians judged at the end of their lives as individuals, but throughout their lives they relate to God on that basis. This aspect of Christianity had momentous consequences.

Though the American founders were inspired by the examples of Greece and Rome, they also saw limitations in those examples. Alexander Hamilton wrote that it would be “as ridiculous to seek for [political] models in the simple ages of Greece and Rome as it would be to go in quest of them among the Hottentots and Laplanders.” In The Federalist Papers, we read at one point that the classical idea of liberty decreed “to the same citizens the hemlock on one day and statues on the next….” And elsewhere: “Had every Athenian citizen been a Socrates, every Athenian assembly would still have been a mob.” While the ancients had direct democracy that was susceptible to the unjust passions of the mob and supported by large-scale slavery, we today have representative democracy, with full citizenship and the franchise extended in principle to all. Let us try to understand how this great change came about.

Tearfully trashing traditional marriage, and those who support it

I have to wonder if Mr. O would get this teary eyed advocating polygamy. Without interjecting any undue personal opinion into the matter, the fact is that marriage is between one man and one woman as it has generally been defined as throughout history, or it simply becomes whatever anyone defines it to be, with all the myriad of variances and possibilities that implies. As a culture America, and Western Civilization in general, will have to make that decision. Hopefully they will make the correct one, and continue to frustrate Mr. Olbermann to no end.

Olbermann’s twisted version of theology, principle, tradition, marriage and concept of ‘love’ aside I must say it is indeed far better to have your name in the Book of Life than this world’s “Book of Love” (as defined by him). The Left has managed to turn nearly every issue on it’s head. Right is wrong, perversity is normal, lust is love, deviancy is desirable, immorality is morality and that which rejects values is in itself a treasured value. As a culture, you know we are approaching the brink when every thing that is wrong is called “right” and those who stubbornly cling to what is right, and condemning what is wrong, are mocked, vilified, branded as bigots and themselves considered by the popular culture as being wrong. I have been mockingly referred to as a “modern day Isaiah” in the past and though I am nothing of the sort I do believe the original Isaiah (as in the Old Testament Hebrew prophet) had some wise things to say. “Woe to them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” It is as true today as it was then.

I wonder if Mr. Olbermann ever bothered to read Romans 1:28-32. It sounds like Paul could see him directly through the sands of time.

28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Dave’s Quote of the Day

… In the name of Multiculturalism we completely ignore all ethnic, religious, cultural and, yes, racial differences, because we have decided that these things don’t matter. But in real life, ethnicity, culture, religion and race do matter.

Policy needs to be rooted in a realistic assessment of human nature, not in wishful thinking. Good intentions are far from sufficient to ensure good results. History is full of well-intended policies gone horrible wrong. We know from past experience that basing an ideological world view on a fundamentally flawed understanding of human nature is bound to end in disaster. Society will become more and more totalitarian in order to suppress all the information that doesn’t conform to the official ideology. Isn’t this what is happening in the West now?

I used to believe until quite recently that skin color was irrelevant. I was brought up that way. I still don’t think ethnicity or race does or should mean everything. In fact, I would say it is patently uncivilized to claim that it means everything. But I can no longer say with a straight face that it means absolutely nothing, and if it means more than nothing, it needs to be taken into account. Whether we like this or not is immaterial. …

Ur so gay. . .

Many of you know that I am a high school football coach in Colorado.  My team is now in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs which isn’t the biggest deal unless you are a big high school football fan; like my friend.  This buddy of mine is a guy who has big-time football knowledge and generally loves the game.  He and I have coached the sport together and separately since we were 20.  If my team is in a big game, he is usually there analyzing the game.  When he coached a team to the state finals, I did the same.

There is one other minor detail to his football obsession: it has lately been replaced by an unhealthy obsession of the performing arts.  Musical theater is his drug of choice but he also dabbles in symphonies, plays, museums and such.  So when I called him to let him know that my game was Friday night at 7:00 p.m., he politely informed me that he would be attending the opera.  No you read it correctly. . . the opera.  Keep in mind, he missed an earlier game between us and the #1 team in the state to go to the symphony.  On a Friday night.  In the fall.

Here’s to you DFV.

Barack on the Surge: Then and Now

Like most everybody, except McCain and our own DFV, Obama was one hundred percent wrong when it came to “the surge”. In many ways, it was the deciding factor (along with the sometimes maligned Gen. Petraeus and his tactics) that drastically curtailed the violence and bloodshed in Iraq and probably “won” the war for the US and our coalition allies.

It takes a lot to admit when you are wrong. It takes even more to admit you are wrong when you want to be the leader of the free world. It would take a statesman to embrace the tactics, concepts, ideas and policies that would lead to victory on the battlefield once you had adopted the poor policy of attacking the very tactics, concepts, ideas and policies that had brought success all across the board on nearly every level in a time of war.

Change? Yeah, I want change. I want Obama to change.

Barack on Iraq:

January 2007—”And until we acknowledge that reality, uh, we can send 15,000
more troops; 20,000 more troops; 30,000 more troops. Uh, I don’t know any,
uh, expert on the region or any military officer that I’ve spoken to, uh,
privately that believes that that is gonna make a substantial difference on
the situation on the ground.”

July 2007—”Here’s what we know. The surge has not worked. And they said
today, ‘Well, even in September, we’re going to need more time.’ So we’re
going to kick this can all the way down to the next president, under the
president’s plan… My assessment is that the surge has not worked and we
will not see a different report eight weeks from now.”

September 2007—”After putting an additional 30,000 troops in… we have
gone from a horrendous situation of violence in Iraq to the same intolerable
levels of violence that we had back in June of 2006. So, essentially, after
all this we’re back where we were 15 months ago… It is a course that will
not succeed.”

January 2008—”I had no doubt, and I said when I opposed the surge, that
given how wonderfully our troops perform, if we place 30,000 more troops
in there, then we would see an improvement in the security situation and we
would see a reduction in the violence.”

Now: “What I said was even at the time of the debate of the surge, was if
you put 30,000 troops in, of course it’s going to have an impact. There’s
no doubt about that.”

The pitiful path of Multiculturalism

Schoolboys punished with detention for refusing to kneel in class and pray to Allah

Two schoolboys were given detention after refusing to kneel down and ‘pray to Allah’ during a religious education lesson.

Parents were outraged that the two boys from year seven (11 to 12-year-olds) were punished for not wanting to take part in the practical demonstration of how Allah is worshipped.

They said forcing their children to take part in the exercise at Alsager High School, near Stoke-on-Trent – which included wearing Muslim headgear – was a breach of their human rights.

It is sometimes sad to have to sit and watch the slow disintegration of Western Civilization. The country that once set out to make the rest of the world “British” is now coercively teaching its children Islam while fretting about whether flying the English flag is somehow “racist”. How far they have fallen as the sun sets on the once mighty British Empire.

Can you imagine the uproar if the Pakistanis in the UK were forced to attend mass or partake in Holy Communion? There would be riots in the streets and the cabal of Leftists and Liberal apologists would be crying for blood and revenge while screaming tyranny and oppression with all their might.

If a similar situation were to happen to my children, that teacher would be ruing the day she made that mistake. Here is the gobbly gook, PC doublespeak reaction to the incident from the school.

“The headteacher David Black contacted this authority immediately complaints were received.

“Enquiries are being made into the circumstances as a matter of urgency and all parents will be informed accordingly.

“Educating children in the beliefs of different faith is part of the diversity curriculum on the basis that knowledge is essential to understanding.

“We accept that such teaching is to be conducted with some sense of sensitivity.”

Happy Birthday America!

“It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Day’s Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.”

- John Adams, in a letter to his wife on July 3, 1776

As we celebrate and commemorate the birthday of the United States of America it is my honor to defer to a man both wiser and more eloquent than myself to express the proper sentiments for this country on this day. We are still a beacon of hope; a generous and strong people who abide in that city on the hill showing the world that there is a better way. Much of the world’s population still lives under the iron fist of fear, totalitarianism, oppression and terror where the right to worship God or to openly express one’s thoughts and feelings is forbidden and often results in severe persecution.

Liberty and Justice still exist in this great nation of ours, and I for one am proud to call myself a free citizen of this country. It is worth fighting for and the principles it has stood for over the last 200 plus years have changed the world, liberated hundreds of millions from the boot of tyranny, and created unrivalled opportunity and hope for countless people. We may take it for granted the rest of the year, but on this day it is important to stop and reflect on how blessed we are to be Americans. Every July 4th I take the time to thank God for my country and having had the privilege of being born an American.

It is an honor that I do not take lightly and every day I do what small part I can to make her a better place to raise my children and improve the lives of my fellow citizen. I am proud to say I am an American on this day and sincerely hope that the generations of free and proud Americans that follow me that will share that same feeling. God bless America, and may America bless God.

“And so tonight we reaffirm that Jew and gentile, we are one nation under God; that black and white, we are one nation indivisible; that Republican and Democrat, we are all Americans. Tonight, with heart and hand, through whatever trial and travail, we pledge ourselves to each other and to the cause of human freedom, the cause that has given light to this land and hope to the world.”

Yes, it will work

I had posed the question  “will it work?” a while ago as to whether the attempt to create my own flagpole would be a success. It would appear that it is. Last night my faithful and handy with a drill wife and I put the finishing touches on my neighbors former tornado trash debris and now my proud fourteen and half foot flagpole. We poured the concrete base this evening and the official first flying of the flag and simple but heartfelt dedication will be taking place on Friday morning, July fourth. A fitting occasion to debut my new flagpole and accompanying American flag to the neighborhood and community. I will actually be flying a thirteen star “Betsy Ross” flag on that day and I hope to have some pictures up of our new creation in the very near future. Some may seek pleasure by despoiling, burning, or otherwise desecrating the American flag, but I seek to honor it and the sacrifices, history and ideals that it represents.

Remembering the Korean War: 58 years ago today – 06-25-08

It truly is “the forgotten war“. Try finding a headline about this in the MSM today. It was a bloody war with a series of ebbs and flows with each side all but overwhelming and destroying the other at one time or another. It is also the only “hot war” we have ever fought with China with the US inflicting some 100,000 casualties on Mao’s troops. Nearly six decades later we see the results of their sacrifices. In the South, a prosperous free people who have plenty to eat with electricity, modern conveniences, and a high standard of living is the norm. In the North, millions of people live in what is virtually a giant gulag in deplorable conditions with terror, starvation and oppression the rule rather than the exception. When the rogue regime of North Korea finally falls the true level of the horrors those poor people have endured will finally be fully known.

Our heartfelt thanks today to the brave men who fought in horrible conditions against a vast, overwhelming and fanatical enemy. They “stood on the wall” to protect the free world from the sick ideology of communism and tens of thousands of them paid the ultimate price.

The Korean War Remembered

Fifty-eight years ago, a war broke out on the Korean peninsula, and today, the two sides – South and North Korea – remain technically at war and divided.Although it has been more than five decades, there are still South Koreans – who were soldiers at the time – being kept against their will in North Korea.
One of the prisoners of war (POW), Kim Jin Soo, recently escaped the North. The 74-year-old POW fought in the Korean War at the age of 17 and was captured by the North Koreans in 1953.
All these years, he had been living in the communist state working as a coal miner. But earlier this month, he managed to escape North Korea and seek help from the South Korean authorities. He is now waiting to return home for the first time in 55 years
Kim is one of the hundreds of POWs who were never sent back home after the three-year Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice in 1953.

The Korean government admits there are more than 500 POWs in North Korea, but there are no official talks underway between the two Koreas to bring them back home

Dave’s Quote of the Day

And if we elect a government that subverts or weakens or ends our war against terrorism, we can count on this: We will soon face enemies that will make 9/11 look like stubbing our toe, and they will attack us with the confidence and determination that come from knowing that we don’t have the will to sustain a war all the way to the end.

Stop it, you’re killing me…

I’m speechless. Twenty nine thousand dollars for this? Nero fiddled while Rome burned… and then he blamed the Christians for it. Western Civilization, what hath ye wrought? It’s an interesting concept but the kind of halfhearted attempts to flail away at ‘evil oil’ is a bit much. Are you complaining about high prices or that we have to have oil to get to work, bring food to the stores and heat our homes? Even she doesn’t really seem to know what point she’s trying to make, but she sure knows how to make it. Whatever that may be.

I was going to say something about this gal needing a hobby, but apparently she’s found it. How do these people get these jobs? Wrapper of abandoned building, UN Special Rapporteur. I need a cushy job like that. Blogger extraordinaire, planter of vegetables, typer of words, producer of children… and I’ll need lots of donations to keep me going as well. Somebody’s got to save the planet with your money. It might as well be me.

Artist Covers Old Gas Station with Huge Blanket

”I really tried to find a good balance of art and politics. I don’t want it to be just a political statement. And I don’t want it to just be a sculpture,” said the 27-year-old Marsh, who is finishing her master of fine arts degree at nearby Syracuse University

”I wanted to startle people so they would stop and think about it (oil) … and be inspired to make up their own opinions about the situation and how it has affected their community,” she said.

With the help of professional and amateur artists from 15 countries and more than 2,500 grade-school students in 29 states, Marsh covered the 50-year-old former Citgo station — pumps, light stands, signs and all — with more than 3,000 fiber panels that are crocheted, knitted, quilted or stitched together.

”My teacher told us it’s about creating a caring community,” he said.

Or about creating an eyesore and gawdy tourist attraction. I wonder how many people drove their cars to go look at the big blankie attacking “oil”? Wait until you see what she did with her lawnmower.

My panel would have said:

My car runs on food. Oil sucks, but now I’m hungry.

“Science Studies” – Narrative Replaces Reason.

The political and social left’s ongoing romance with moral relativism is drearily familiar to us all. How many times have we been told there is no ultimate right or wrong, just shades of perspective? What’s anathema to one person may be the daily pit-stop to another. Of course, this is only true up to a point. The left is just as capable (if not moreso) of creating their own moral absolutes as their foes on the right. “Choice’ becomes an ultimate imperative over “Life”, for example.

Remember when Al Gore redefined the so-called “Climate Change” crisis as a “moral issue”. Considering that the science is tanking rapidly as the planet appears to be cooling instead of warming, this might have been the most expedient move for him, because it shifts the spotlight. The advantage of moral absolutes are – not only are they immune to mundane facts, but those who disagree with them can be tarred (not as dissenters) but as literally bad people. And, while it’s hard to get any traction in a free society for the idea that people shouldn’t be allowed to disagree with an Idea, it’s easy enough to argue that people shouldn’t be allowed to be immoral. The debate changes from “How can the planet be warming when temperatures haven’t budged in a decade and the oceans have actually cooled?” to “No, I am not morally equivalent to those villagers who lived outside Auschwitz because I don’t buy the Climate Change narrative.”

The Left has had a thorny relationship with science for a while now. The Beast alluded to it in an earlier post in which he pointed out that researchers have come up with findings inimical to many cherished Feminist beliefs. But there are others.

Genetic research on the origins of Man in North America suggests a European source for many Native American Populations. This confounds the narrative that American Indians came exclusively from Asia and Europeans are invaders.

Exposure to hormones in Utero changes behavior in children flies in the face of the idea that gender-based traits (boys like guns – girls like EZ Bake Ovens) is an artifical social construct.

And so on…

So how do we reconcile these problems? Enter “Science Studies”.

The Volokh Conspiracy reprints with permission an excerpt from a Professor Levitt, coauthor of the highly recommended Higher Superstition: The Academic Left and its Quarrels with Science. Professor Levitt criticizes the work of Palestinian Anthropologist Nadia Abu El-Haj, who published a book attempting to debunk Israeli Archaeological research into ancient Jewish communities in Israel. Obviously, if Jews never really lived in “Palestine”, then their claims to the territory are false. Levitt states:

My disquiet arises because I think Abu el Haj represents a pseudo-discipline that has gained some traction in universities despite its serious methodological and philosophical defects. The area is usually called “science studies” and its proponents can be found in anthropology and sociology departments, as well as in literary studies.

Abu el Haj tries to engage with archaeology on the basis of the assumptions and theories that are regnant in “science studies”, as her book plainly concedes.

These ideas are at the least heavily tinctured with what, for want of a better term, is usually called “postmodernism.” This incorporates the attitude that knowledge claims are, perforce, political claims, that “objective knowledge” is an oxymoron, and that modern science, in particular, is a repressive ideological edifice designed to bolster the hegemony of western capitalist patriarchal societies, not least by demeaning and displacing the “alternative ways of knowing” that are embedded in non-western cultures or are simply more appropriate to marginalized sub-populations (women for instance!)

Science isn’t really “science”. It’s politics and bias masquerading as truth – because we all know that there is no truth. Except our truth, of course.

The unifying theme of all these theorists is that the manifest content of scientific discoveries is not determined by the relevant physical facts of the universe but is “socially constructed” by some kind of murky alchemy that synthesizes the social and political interests of scientists into scientific theories.

Almost all scientists, as well as philosophers of science in the traditional sense, find this overarching theory of the nature of science to be highly unconvincing, to say the least. I cite some well-known critiques, to some of which I have contributed: “Levitt and Gross, “Higher Superstition,” Boghossian, “The Fear of Knowledge’, Haack, “Defending Science–Within Reason”, Sokal and Bricmont, “Fashionable Nonsense”, Koertge (ed.), “A House Built on Sand”, and Gross, Levitt and Lewis (ed.), “The Flight from Science and Reason.”

These critiques, however, have not dampened the enthusiasm of some would-be scholars, usually with blatant political motivations, to dedicate their academic careers to “science studies” in some context or other.

Not suprisingly, scientists disagree. One has to wonder what “Science Studies” acolytes think is happening when they flick a wall switch and an electric light goes on.

One clear advantage to this methodology, obviously, is that it gives its practitioners leave to dismiss scientific findings they find discomfiting without the necessity of developing significant scientific arguments against them. If science is a phantom constructed by a cabal with social interests opposed to yours, you have only to utter a few magic words from the science-studies canon and, poof!, the offending ideas go up in smoke.

In the grand ideological cathedral of leftist academe, all must serve the greater goal. Those Scientists whose work contradicts dogma must be brought to heel. “Moral relativism” served the left for decades as a tool to attack and replace the traditional moral structure of western society, so why not “Scientific Relativism”? They have their cake and they get to eat it too.
